GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The co-leader of a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was sentenced to 16 years in prison Tuesday for plotting to kidnap a Democrat and blow up a bridge to ease his escape.

Jonker said he also considered the emotional baggage Whitmer would have to carry due to the plot.

In addition to the 16-year prison sentence, Fox will serve five years of supervised release. He will also receive credit for more than two years in custody since his arrest.
Fox and Croft were convicted at a second trial in August, months after another grand jury in Grand Rapids, Michigan, failed to reach a verdict but acquitted two other men. Croft, a truck driver from Bear, Delaware, will be sentenced on Wednesday.
Fox and Croft in 2020 met like-minded provocateurs at a summit in Ohio, received firearms training in Michigan and Wisconsin, and took a ride to “keep an eye” on Whitmer’s motel with night vision goggles, according to the evidence.
“People need to end their anger in the wrong places and put it where it needs to be, and that goes against our … tyrannical government,” Fox announced that spring, seething. because of COVID-19 restrictions and perceived threats to gun ownership.

Jonker said there was nothing that made him think of Fox as a “natural born leader,” but said that plots like the one to kidnap Whitmer cost “a lot of fuel” and that Fox had “provided that.”
“It’s important to realize that the chances of this ever happening are, thank God, low because law enforcement got in early,” Jonker said. “I think the chances of this actually happening are extremely low.”
Fox was regularly exposed to “inciting rhetoric” by FBI informants, especially former soldier Dan Chappel, who “manipulated more than just Fox’s sense of ‘patriotism’ but also men’s needs for friendship, acceptance and approval,” Gibbons said in court filings.
He said prosecutors exaggerated Fox’s abilities, saying he was poor and incapable of getting the bomb and executing the plan.
The two men who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and testifying against Fox and Croft have received substantial respite: Ty Garbin was released from prison after serving two and a half years in prison, while Kaleb Franks was sentenced to four years.
In state court, three men were recently sentenced to long terms for assisting Fox in early summer 2020. Five more are awaiting trial in Antrim County, where Whitmer’s motel is located.
When the plot was foiled, Whitmer, a Democrat, blamed then-President Donald Trump, saying he had “provoked comfort to those who sow fear, hatred and divide.” In August, 19 months after leaving office, Trump said the kidnapping plan was a “fake deal”.
