Climate prize winner empowers women in India to become farmers and entrepreneurs



Family members of farmer Dattu Narayan Shewal, who committed suicide after a hailstorm hit his village in Marathwada, India, in 2014. Farmers there grow only cash crops. unique, so a climate-related disaster would wipe out their livelihoods and leave them unable to afford food.  Swayam Shikshan Prayog will seek out their families, especially the women, and help them get back on their feet.

The Swayam Shikshan Prayog group, which will be recognized today at the United Nations COP27 summit, focuses on restoring livelihoods, especially for women, amid the negative impacts of climate change.
