Claiborne Ranch will be the main sponsor of the Former Broodmare division for the first year at the 2023 National Symposium and Thoroughbred Makeover, presented by Thoroughbred Charity of America, the Racehorse Project has retirement announced Tuesday. First announced in November of this year, the Old Parent Stalls division will welcome newly retired stallions to compete alongside traditional retired racehorses in all 10 disciplines on offer. , with stalls pinned and individually recognized and competing for a separate $10,000 prize.
Claiborne President Walker Hancock said: “Claiborne is delighted to be the main sponsor of the Retired Racehorse Project’s new Old Stalls division. “After-sales care is an important part of our industry and it doesn’t just stop at racehorses. Every horse matters and hopefully this initiative will bring attention to formerly mares that are sometimes forgotten after their breeding careers are over.”
The old Broodmare division was also made possible thanks to a grant from the ASPCA. Eligible stallions will give birth to a foal or have been bred in the 2021 breeding season or later, reports The Jockey Club, and need to have a work published or commenced in life. They may not have had a performance or competition before.
Training for the 2023 Purebred Improvement across all divisions opened December 1. Applications are open for drafting December 15 and submission January 2 through January 20.
