CJI Ramana, who retired on August 26, sent a letter of recommendation to law minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday morning and then invited Justice Lalit to his room to give him a copy of the letter. Justice Lalit, who will be sworn in as CJI by the President on August 27, will serve a 74-day term and retire on November 8.
Justice Lalit, born 9 November 1957, registered as an advocate in June 1983. After practicing for two years in Bombay HC, he moved to Delhi in January 1986 and was appointed as an advocate by SC. senior advocate in 2004. Son. of former HC judge UR Lalit, he is the most popular on the SC bench. The SC Board of Directors headed by Professor of Justice Singhvi appointed Lalit as a special prosecutor in 2G semi-spectrum fraud cases. He was appointed judge of SC on 13 August 2014.
As a senior advocate, Lalit made a name for himself as a criminal law practitioner like his father UR Lalit. Both practice in SC. Sr Lalit was an additional judge in the Delhi high court when Indira Gandhi The government declared a state of emergency in 1975. But he was one of the few HC judges who dared to abide by the law and defied political pressure to continue to grant bail for political prisoners. Predictably, the government took revenge and did not confirm Sr Lalit as the HC judge.
