Citizenship in Oecd-member countries rebounds to stand at 23 lakh in 2021, over 1.3 lakh Indians acquired citizenship in 2020

MUMBAI: The number of foreign nationals naturalizing in Oecd member countries in 2021 is the highest ever recorded at 230,000, based on preliminary and partial data, according to the National Migration Outlook Report economy – 2022, published in Paris today.
The 20% increase year-on-year, when the naturalization rate stood at 19 lakh, is partly due to a reduction in the backlog of naturalization applications during the Covid-19 pandemic. Very strong increases have been registered in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Norway and Shirt. In 2019, before the pandemic wreaked havoc, the number of naturalization in Oecd member countries stood at 22 lakh.
Source country wise figures are not available for 2021. However, Indians continue to hold first place in 2020. Over 1,300,000 Indians already have citizenship of Oecd member countries. – more than half of which is concentrated in three countries, the United States (47 000), Canada (15,000) and the United Kingdom (11,000). Nearly 88,745 Mexicans have acquired foreign citizenship – most of them Americans.
In 2019, 1.56 thousand Indians obtained citizenship of Oecd member countries, naturalization of Indians in the US (63,500), Canada (31,300), Australia (28,500) and Great Britain (14,700). A comparison between 2019 and 2020 statistics shows a decrease in the number of Indians obtaining foreign citizenship, as the pandemic is halting the processing of citizenship applications and the swearing-in ceremony. Country wise figures for 2021, when released will show an exact recovery.
Oecd member countries received 480,000 new permanent residents in 2021, up 22% from 2020, but still half a million fewer than in 2019. USA remains the largest recipient of permanent immigrants in 2021 (8.34 lakh), 43%
more than in 2020 and 19% less than in 2019. In the EU, the trend of permanent migration (up 15%) is less pronounced. The permanent migration stream does not include temporary worker migrants or international students; however, they include not only new arrivals of those classified as permanent residents, but also changes in status within the country, such as from temporary work visas (e.g. H-1B ) to a permanent residence (eg a green card).
