Via Daniele D’Alessio: According to the Daily Mail, all boxing matches are suspended in January, which means a match between Chris Eubank Jr (31-2, 23 KOs) vs Liam Williams (23-3-1, 18 KOs) ) is likely to be rescheduled.
Bitter rivals will fight on January 29, 2022 at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff. But it looks like this match will be delayed for the second time in a row.
Originally, Eubank Jr and Williams were due to clash on December 11, 2020, but The Welshman withdrew due to a shoulder injury.
After years of nasty exchanges on social media and a real 50-50 fight on paper, this contest is seen as an absolute fight.
Williams is on a unanimous decision loss to Demetrius Andrade (31-0, 19 KOs) while Eubank Jr won his last match against Wanik Awdijan (28-2, 11 KOs).
At 32, these delays don’t bode well for the Next Gen boxer, who is said to still not have a world-class victory on his résumé.
A win over The Machine could set up a fight against the legendary Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs), whom he was close to scheduling a matchup with several years ago.
Kell Brook (39-3, 27 KOs) famously moved up two weight classes to take on Triple G and was brutally stopped on the 5th round.
For Williams, a win over Eubank Jr would significantly improve his reputation and open the door to lucrative matches against other top opponents.
With COVID cases on the rise in the UK, there is no guarantee this can be rescheduled for early Spring. However, if the situation is better, we could see this fight take place in May or June.
Due to Williams’ popularity in Wales, the competition is likely to be held in Cardiff once again. As an all-British showdown, fighting outside the UK may not attract enough ticket sales.
After two bouts of destruction in a row, boxing fans can only hope that the bout is worth the wait as the intense showdown finally comes to an end in 2022.
