BEIJING – President of China Xi Jinping called the President of the United States Joe Biden on Friday to wish the US leader a “quick recovery” from Covid, according to state media.

Biden has tested positive for Covid-19 and has “very mild symptoms” The White House said Thursday. The US embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment regarding Mr. Xi’s call report with Biden.

Mr. Xi expressed “deepest sympathy” in this appeal, according to a CNBC translation of the Chinese state media report. The brief did not mention whether the leaders discussed other topics.

On Wednesday, Biden told reporters at a news conference that he expected to speak with Xi within 10 days, but did not specify the reason or subject for a call.

The two leaders last spoke in March, mainly about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. China has refused to call the attack an invasion.
