China willing to make effort for peaceful ‘reunification’ with Taiwan

BEIJING: China is willing to make maximum efforts to strive for a peaceful “reunification” with Taiwan, a Chinese government spokesman said on Wednesday, after weeks of military exercises and Beijing’s war game near the island.
China claims democratically administered Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s claim and says only the people of the island can decide their future.
China has been conducting drills near Taiwan since early last month after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei, including firing missiles into waters near the island.
Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, told a news conference in Beijing that China is willing to make the greatest efforts to achieve peaceful “reunification”.
China’s determination to defend its territory is unwavering, he added.
China has proposed a “one country, two systems” model for Taiwan, similar to the formula under which former British colony Hong Kong returned. Rules of China in 1997.
According to opinion polls, all of Taiwan’s mainstream political parties rejected the proposal and it received little public support.
China has also never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, and in 2005 passed legislation giving it the legal basis to take military action against Taiwan if it break away or seem to be about to.
The Taiwanese government says that the island has never been ruled by the People’s Republic of China, so its claims are void.
