Cheapest 144Hz HDMI 2.1 4K monitor drops to £399 at Currys

The 28-inch Gigabyte M28U is one of the most affordable HDMI 2.1 4K 144Hz monitors, ideal for use with PCs, PS5s and Series Xs. Usually it’s available with high numbers but easy to understand for specs. Its specs are £669, but for Black Friday (and its aftershocks) it’s been reduced to £399, which is quite an attractive price.

So why consider the M28U? The short answer is that it’s an ideal accessory for mid-to-high-end gaming PCs, giving you the option of sharp 4K resolution, a high 144Hz refresh rate, or both at the same time if your device needs it. Your gear is up to the task. I personally used the original 4K 144Hz display with the now pedestrian RTX 2080, where I find the high resolution useful for content creation and slower games like Civil, while I have You can reduce the resolution and take advantage of the high refresh rate for competitive games like Counter-Strike or DotA. However, nowadays, especially with the advent of frame rate enhancement technologies such as DLSS, FSR 2, and XeSS, it is much easier to produce 4K output resolution at high frame rates, and so a 4K 144Hz display makes even more sense.

The M28U is an especially good choice for color-sensitive work like photo or video editing, thanks to its 100% sRGB coverage and 94% DCI P3 color space, with enough brightness for DisplayHDR 400 certification. It’s limited to 120Hz 4:2:0 over HDMI 2.1, the maximum refresh rate supported by the PS5 and Series X, but you can push it up to 144Hz on a PC using its DisplayPort 1.4 connection. Motion clarity is also excellent, with a GtG response time rated to 1ms and FreeSync/G-Sync support to smooth out uneven frame rates, eliminate screen tearing, and reduce shake .

The M28U also has some cool features, such as a KVM that allows monitors, plus a connected keyboard and mouse, to swap between controlling multiple computers. As stated the last time we covered this screenback in 2021, there’s also plenty of casual gameplay features like a genre-specific mode, a black equalizer to spot enemies in dark corners, and lots of cheat crosses, etc.

So: interesting times and definitely a monitor worth considering given the price difference between the discounted M28U and other HDMI 2.1 4K 144Hz models.
