Charter and Comcast team up to build ‘next-gen’ streaming hardware
Two of America’s largest cable providers are joining forces to adapt to the internet era. Charter and Comcast has disclosure a joint venture that will create a “next-generation” streaming platform for a range of branded media devices and smart TVs. It will be based on Comcast’s Flexand would not be surprised to include services like Peacock and Free Xumo to watch along with “all the top apps.”
Platform will be available on Comcast’s TV XClasswhile Charter will offer streaming devices with voice remotes starting in 2023. Flex and Xumo will still be available as standalone products, so you won’t have to buy hardware new.
The telecoms insist that they all have an equal stake in the joint venture and that their cable and broadband services are unrelated. Initially, Charter will pour $900 million into the project over “multiple years”.
Teaming up isn’t shocking. Both Charter and Comcast face constant pressure from more and more streaming servicesincluding Disney+ and the ultimate combination of Discovery+ and HBO Max. It is also known that Comcast’s Peacock, while moderate success, which is still small compared to heavyweights like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. New platform can help cable companies thrive even with their regular TV subscriptions continue to decreaseand can leverage services like Peacock and Xumo in the process.
