Charli XCX brings Brat Fall to ‘Saturday Night Live’

It’s a pity some people may have given up Saturday night live in cold times, before the painful sight of James Austin Johnson‘S President Trump And Dana Carvey‘S President Biden sitting on his knees in the White House. This is not the time to laugh. Even Carvey’s wonderful turn as Biden—stumbling for words, eyes rolling back in eerie confusion—begins to feel tired. “It’s my own version of ‘weaving’,” he says. “I call it ‘wandering’.” But then Sarah Sherman entered the scene as Trump’s ridiculous choice for Attorney General, Matt Gaetz. She’s almost unrecognizable beneath her toddler’s bird-painted eyebrows, plastic forehead and Elvis hair. (Alec Baldwin appears as head of Trump’s proposed Department of Health and Human Services RFK Jr.., but his cameos are starting to feel boring at this point.) There’s an infectiousness to the fun Sherman takes in the fully tilted padding. And as we took Trump and Biden off the stage, the episode kicked off the race.

Host and musical guest Charlie XCX What a damn ice cream. As a sketching partner, she has a good perspective and a light touch. As musical guest, soloing on the understated stages for both shows, she had a mesmerizing authority. (Julia Fox is an inspired choice to make the first introduction; Bowen positive a lovely sentiment for her second performance.)

During her monologue, Charli seemed worry-free and indulgent. She tried to help those of us older people understand what it meant to be a Brat. She pointed to the double movements of Martha Stewart Rejoice at the death of the journalist Andrea savagewho wrote unfavorably about her, and then Savage declared the next day, “I’m alive, bitch.” What a fun thing to see Kyle Mooneywho appeared with Charli in the beloved psychedelic “Christmas Stockings” sketch a few years ago, returns to Studio 8H, wondering if even a man like him can hope for Brat status or not. “Favorite type of club?” she asked him. “Probably turkey,” he said. Charli XCX ended her monologue with the promise, “I here, so please stay, we’ll be right back!” Kid.
