Challenge: Kentucky Downs to host two races


It’s safe to say that the two horses that won Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win & You’re In docks in North America this weekend will be thoroughly tested.

Ensuring that safe bets are full fields await two North American stops on the Challenge schedule on September 10 at Kentucky Downs. In a field limited to 12 starters, 15 horses were entered into a $1 million FanDuel Turf Sprint (G2T) Bet, a six-times test that awards one paid slot in the starting portal of Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T); while 13 horses were entered (up to 12 starts again) in the $1 million Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes (G2T), matching the 1/2 mile distance of the respective race, Longines Turf (G1T).

During the FanDuel Turf Sprint, Catch me red was the favorite 9-5 light line after finishing runner-up in Jaipur Stakes (G1T) in June at Belmont Park and his clear win in the Twin Spiers Turf Sprint Stakes presented by Sysco (G2T) in May at Churchill Downs. Arrest Me Red raced to Lael Stables and was coached by Wesley Ward.

The FanDuel Turf Sprint winner has yet to catch the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Last year’s winner, Gear Jockey 6th place in the Breeders ‘Cup Turf Sprint, competing in the top five Del Mar course.

While Gufo were the favorites on Saturday morning 7-5 at the Kentucky Turf Cup following his August 27 victory in the Casino World Casino Sword Dancer Stakes (G1T) on the pitch at Racecourse Saratoga, Arklow could prove to be an audience favorite as he tries to win this race for the third time since 2018. Arklow followed up on his 2018 win in this race with a fourth place finish. Breeders’ Cup Turf, his best finish to date after three tries at that race.

Owned by Donegal Racing and Joseph Bulger and trained by Brad Cox, the Connections are expecting another Kentucky Downs to try after finishing second in this race last year. 8 year old son of Roof finish as runner-up to Rockempang during Bowling Green Stakes (G2T) on July 31 in Saratoga.

“He likes it, and when a horse likes it, you take advantage of it because there are a lot of horses that don’t like it,” Cox said. “He’s a horse that loves the Kentucky Downs. We’ll see how it goes.”

Jerry Crawford of Donegal Racing calls this race his Horse Breeders’ Cup.

“He couldn’t have done any better,” Crawford said. “His first race was a lengthy lay-off; we intentionally gave him a long layoff. He was dead when we eliminated him and he was dead when we brought him back. And he died today. So we’re pretty excited about that at the age of 8. His comeback race at Saratoga, he couldn’t have run any better. first told you it was a race we were supposed to win. So we’re going to the Kentucky Downs with a lot of confidence.”
