CES 2022 will end a day early amid a spike in COVID-19

After few companies canceled all plans in place for CES next week, the organization running the show today announced that the event will end a day early. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) says CES 2022 will now take place January 5-7 “as an additional safety measure to existing health protocols already in place.” January 3 and 4 are media-only days when press conferences and keynotes take place.

The protocols include masks and proof of vaccinations for attending live events. The CTA also recently announced that they will be offering Abbott BinaxNOW COVID-19 tests upon badge receipt. The association required attendees to complete a 24-hour quick test before entering the CES venue. If someone experiences symptoms while in a CES venue, the CTA has advised them to report it to a first aid station for testing. The organization said it will also make PCR tests available to any attendees who are required to have one at their destination before departing from Las Vegas.

In the last week, well-known exhibitors such as Amazon, Google, Intel, Lenovo, Meta and more have canceled their live plans for CES 2022. As part of today’s announcement, the CTA explained that more than 2,200 companies will still display their wares on the ground in Vegas, noting that it added 143 more in the past two weeks.

CTA CEO Gary Shapiro defended the decision to keep the show a live event as the omicron variation caused the number of COVID-19 cases to spike in some parts of the world. “As the world’s most influential technology event, CES is steadfast in its commitment to being a gathering place to showcase products and discuss ideas that will ultimately make our lives better,” said Shapiro. more beautiful”. “We are shortening the show to three days and have put in place comprehensive health measures to ensure the safety of all attendees and participants.” Shapiro pointed to smaller companies relying on the event as a potential springboard for products as a key reason not to cancel the event. CES 2021 completely virtual.

“We will all take risks,” he said in a recent op-ed give Las Vegas Review Magazine. “But without risk there is no innovation.”
