Celtics look weird in Game 5 loss to the Warriors

I suppose, when it’s all over, if the Warriors are over, this Finals will be seen as an example of how important championship experience is. That’s an easy conclusion to reach as the Celtics definitely look like the better team most of the time. And they found themselves 3-2 down again against the Warriors, who were saying to me right now, “GO HERE FIRST.” But I am not so convinced.

I think the Celtics are weird. There can’t be a team that has come this far that can crazily transform from looking undefeated to looking like five boys trying to break through high school confinement in the same game. Sometimes it’s in the same quarter. Such volatility would normally cost a team a point ahead of this round, but the Celtics are equally talented. There couldn’t be a better example than Game 5 last night, but C’s ended up losing 104-94.

In the first quarter, Boston couldn’t stab a bull in the ass with a snow shovel. They were leading 0-5 from three goals, and the only thing keeping them in the game was the fact that Steph Curry’s radar was off all night as he caught 0-9 from 3-point range. They weren’t much better in the second half, but ended up making a couple of thirds and locking in the defence enough to keep the Warriors from sneaking around.

And then in the 3rd half, which was an adventure for all the series and most of the playoffs, they left the Warriors not only struggling to score but also struggling to win a leg. in front of the other leg or even breathing. They overcame Golden State by 11 points, Jayson Tatum got 9 points and 3 assists and continuously made the right fouls to set other points. And there was nothing the Warriors could do. Every Golden State possession looks like they’re trying to move a bench up a walkway up to the third floor, while the C piece zips and whips the ball around to create an open interface sequence. The most obvious proof is that they hit 6 to 9 from three in the stanza, and made eight as early as the second quarter.

And then they… left. With the accelerator on, they probably just took a moment to enjoy the scenery and lost track. Maybe they just enjoy playing with their food, even though they haven’t earned that right yet. Maybe they couldn’t help but destroy their own creativity to give them the excitement they needed to nurture. Jordan Poole hit a treble from another zip code to end the inning, and the Celtics clearly used that as an excuse to fall for themselves, seemingly just for fun.

Tatum could not find a ring, much less a mesh. They treat basketball like food poisoning. Andrew Wiggins of the Warriors ran wild on defense. On a night where Curry failed to hit three and scored just 16, the Celtics not only lost but didn’t come close.

How do you do it? Perhaps the intensity that Cs can give on defense – and when they do they are impenetrable – is so volatile that it is sometimes unavoidable. It looks like they could go from just being constantly in every opponent’s space (and shielding every driving and passing lane) to them biting references and each other and throwing balls all over the arena. like they’re Steamin’ Wille Beamon on a mug of nothing more than a stiff breeze. The Celtics can play with such tantrums on both ends in a good way, but then if even a tiny bit spills out of the bottle, it becomes a dangerously toxic venue and you need a suit. Hazmant to observe it.

Maybe that’s how Celtics coach Ime Udoka has gotten them this far, because both player and coach seem to frequently irritate each other and do their jobs simply in defiance. When they channel that rage out into the world at large, they’re cool. When it turns inward for imperceptible reasons or causes, you get the mess of last Wednesday night. It certainly worked, and there were long periods when the Celtics looked like the best team in the league. But they can’t seem to hold it for 48 minutes. There is a point at every match that it takes place.

They can still win this series. Facing the ax made them focus more on both the Bucks and the Heat, realizing if they wanted to argue with everyone around and give up on both ends one more time it would mean they would have to do so through message for summer. But they’re up against a team that’s making a living, and an era in themselves, just about the most even outfits around. The Warriors don’t have to compare with the Celtics’ highs if they don’t compare them with their lows, which is how they’ve led this series.

And they won Steph-go-0’fer from the deep game. It was absolutely the canyon they had just jumped over.

Wizard of Aus!

We will finish this adventure from Australia. Yesterday, the Australians played against Peru in Qatar for a place in the World Cup. And as tense matches at the end of a long season tend to be, a mess has come with penalties. And Australia chose for themselves a cute ploy to entrench their backup goalkeeper for the penalty shootout. Except Australia tried harder of their backup being a complete loon:

His name is Andrew Redmayne, and this is clearly his gig. It’s not that saving the penalties too much but the whole rigorous process all the time that will put shooters out of luck. The look after he saves someone for a landing pretty much sums up any interaction anyone would ever have with an Australian – not nearly as exciting and funny as they thought but just charming enough to get away with. from it. And that often comes with the kind of “dance” that Redmayne displays, no matter what arena you meet them in, because no one has ever told an Australian to get rid of it or no Australian has ever listened.

At least he found his calling. So few of us can say that.
