To coincide with the game’s 15th anniversary today, CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher Remake is currently in early development. The “official” remake of 2007 RPG is being developed from scratch in Unreal Engine 5 and will use the same toolkit that CDPR is building for Witcher trio. The studio calls the project a “modern re-imagining” and says it’s “updating the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it.”
Fool’s Theory is leading development on the remake, with CDPR providing “full creative oversight.” Fool’s Theory previously worked on games like Outrider and Baldur’s Gate III as a support studio. Adam Badowski, the head of CD Projekt Red, says that The Rogue Theory also has “several people” involved in previous Witcher games. “They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake unfold, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games.”
“I’m glad my professional path has begun again with fellow developers since working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially since it’s a remake project. of a project so close to our hearts,” said Jakub Rokosz, CEO of Fool’s Theory. “We’re excited to partner with CD PROJEKT RED and our goal is to bring players another great game from the iconic Witcher series.”
CDPR said that “although it will be a while before we are ready to share more about and from the match, I know it will be worth the wait.”
The Witcher Remake was previously teased when CD Projekt sketched “Long-term Product Outlook” in the first day of this month. Alongside a brand new Witcher Trilogy movie, the studio introduced a third-party project Canis Majoris, which they have now confirmed as this remake. There’s also Project Sirius in the works, being worked on by developer Flame In The Flood, The Molassus Flood, CDPR bought back last year.
