CCI fines Google Rs 1,338 crore for anti-competitive practices
NEW DELHI: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Thursday said it had fined Alphabet Inc’s Google Rs 1,338 Rs ($161.95 million) for anti-competitive practices related to Android mobile devices.
The CCI also asked Google not to provide any incentives to smartphone manufacturers when it comes to exclusively performing their search services.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Google is facing a series of antitrust lawsuits in India and stricter regulations in the technology sector. The competition watchdog is also looking into Google’s business in the smart TV market and its in-app payment systems.
Google’s Android operating system powers 97% of India’s 600 million smartphones, according to Counterpoint Research.
