Casualties reported after Georgia high school shooting
Police are holding one person after a gunman opened fire at a Georgia high school, and multiple casualties have been reported, local authorities said.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that there are no details available at this time on how many or their conditions.
Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning as students were escorted out to a designated safe area nearby.
Dozens of police officers gathered at the school, which has about 1,900 students.
According to a local Fox News television channel, helicopter footage at the scene showed emergency responders treating multiple people.
After the school was cleared, students were released to their families, some were picked up directly by their parents, others were taken home by school buses.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it was assisting local officers and advised “anyone near the area to stay away while authorities investigate.”
The White House press office said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident and is coordinating with local officials.
