MANILA, Philippines-Challenge yourself in every routine, Carlos Edriel Yulo feels an improvement after finishing eighth in the men’s all-around at the 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool, England .

Yulo appreciated the progress despite not being able to climb to the podium after a record of 82,098 on all six movements in a case where the Filipino gymnast host was barely showing off.

“I am speechless after six events, because I am fighting with myself. It’s really difficult. Overall, really good experience. I’m in the top eight, which isn’t bad and it’s still a big achievement for me. I’m happy but at the same time disappointed,” Yulo said.

Olympic gold medalist Daiki Hashimoto of Japan won gold (87,198) while Zhang Boheng of China (86,785) and Wataru Tanigawa of Japan (85,231) ranked second and third.

“I need to correct my mistakes when I return home. Everything else is not bad, although I would say the vault is a positive mistake,” said Yulo, who accomplished his goal of being in the top eight of all.

Yulo excelled in the floor exercise, the event that brought him to the top of the world in 2019 and also topped the tandem table with an identical score of 15,166 after placing sixth in rounds (13,800).

The defending world champion in men’s diving, however, finished 15th in his pet event out of 24 finalists after tally of 14,166, lower than his 14,849 performances. it’s in the qualifying round.

Yulo manages to climb to the platform in the floor on Saturday night in the apparatus final and will plunge into action in the medal stage of the arch and parallel bars on Sunday.

“I had fun today too and I didn’t want to lose myself in the middle of the competition. But I did, and it was my fault too. I put more pressure on myself,” Yulo said.

The horse and crossbar continued to be Yulo’s achilles heel, finishing 19th (11,900) and 22nd (11,900) respectively in these events.

“Floor good, but I really need to fix up the horse and the high bar. Vault isn’t bad and the P-bar is fine,” Yulo said.
