MANILA, Philippines — Filipino billiards player Carlo Biado was dethroned in the men’s 9-ball billiards event of the 2022 World Olympics on Sunday.
Biado lost to Joshua Filler of Germany, 8-11, in Sunday’s semi-final (Manila time) at the Sheraton Ballroom in Birmingham, Alabama.
The 38-year-old artist fought back from a 6-10 deficit, winning two consecutive innings to advance in the second round. But Filler hit the shots to beat the defending champion and reach the final.
“Sadly I was not able to go home with a medal in this event but I did my best to defend my title. I played very well. I jog and train every day and feel that I will achieve this again but in the last two matches, luck was not on my side,” Biado shared in a Facebook post.
“I’m still lucky, I [given] an opportunity to represent the Philippines My journey will never stop just because I failed this time.”
Biado, the defending US Open champion, bows to Singaporean Aloysius Yapp, 8-11, during the bronze medal match.
Filler won gold after defeating Sanjin Pehlivanovic of Bosnia 11-8 in the title match.
Meanwhile, Rubilen Amit failed to reach the semi-finals of the women’s 9-ball pool after losing to German Veronika Ivanovskaia 8-9.
