MANILA, Philippines – Carl Tamayo will continue to play professionally in Japan by signing a new contract with the Ryukyu Golden Kings for the 2023-24 B.League season.

Ryukyu, the team that dominated the previous B.League season, announced on Friday that it had extended the contract of the 22-year-old striker as he imported Asia ahead of his bid to maintain the title.

Tamayo, who decided to give up his remaining years in UAAP after two seasons with the University of the Philippines, is looking forward to contributing more to the Golden Kings next season.

“I am delighted and grateful to have the opportunity to play next season with this great organization,” Tamayo said in a statement. “Hope to help the team reach the finish line next season!!! See you soon! Go forth kings!”

The 6-foot-7 Tamayo joined the team midway through the regular season, playing just 16 games, averaging 2.5 points and 1.3 rebounds in 8.4 minutes per game.

Although the playing time is limited and sit on the bench in the final round of B.LeagueRyukyu defeated the Chiba Jets in the best three championship series.

The Golden Kings finished second in the regular season with a 48-12 record before knocking out Bobby Ray Parks Jr.’s Nagoya Diamond Dolphins in the quarterfinals and the Yokohama B-Corsairs in the semifinals.

Tamayo, Rookie of the Year 84 and a two-time legendary member of UAAP, is currently in the country as part of Gilas Pilipinas’ 21-man team for the 2023 Fiba World Cup in August.
