Carl Tamayo earns coach’s praise as he shines in Ryukyu home debut
OKINAWA – Carl Tamayo showed off his first home game in a Ryukyu uniform on Saturday night.
The former University of the Philippines star scored 13 points, two rebounds and a block in the Golden Kings’ 83-78 win over the Taipei Fubon Braves during East Asia Champions League Week here.
“I feel very good. I am very grateful to my teammates, they gave me the confidence to keep taking shots,” he said shortly after the win at Okinawa Arena helped the club rise. 2-0 lead in Group A.
“And my fellow Filipinos came (to see). That really motivates me,” he added.
It’s a pretty big improvement for Tamayo, after finishing with just four points on his professional debut in Utsunomiya two nights ago.
Ryukyu coach Dai Oketani also praised the 22-year-old striker.
“He had a great performance. He can play as a big man,” Oketani said with the help of an interpreter. “Tamayo can open up space for others. Even if he doesn’t get many points, his overall play is very positive for us.”
“When we signed up for our team, we expected him to play in 3rd and 4th place. You can expect that in the (B.League) season,” he said. more.
As impressive as his outing, Tamayo’s performance may be for nothing as the Golden Kings will have to settle for a third place tie with the Bay Area Dragons.
That’s no thanks Rhenz Abando and Anyang KGC who defeated two of their enemies—including San Miguel Beer—with an average of 40 points.
Therefore, Anyang arranges an all-Korea win-win-all match against Seoul this Sunday night.
