MANILA, Philippines – Carl Tamayo reaffirms his commitment to play for Gilas Pilipinas, even as his focus will be on bidding to maintain the University of the Philippines’ title in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament.

“I don’t close the door on Gilas. Always grateful and blessed to represent our country. I am always ready to help the country,” Tamayo said in Filipino on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-7 forward is among the UAAP players eyed by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for the fifth window group of the 2023 Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers as Gilas plays two away games, against Jordan on May 10. 11 and Saudi Arabia on November 13.

Last season’s top rookie vowed to be available for the country as UAAP will take a break from November 7-15 to accommodate the national team’s campaign.

“If they call me, I’ll be there all the time,” Tamayo said.

The 21-year-old has played for Gilas in the last two doors of the World Cup and Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers.

As one of the frontrunners of this season’s Fighting Maroons, Tamayo shared his experience with his college teammates as they looked to win their second championship in a row.

“What I have shared with my teammates when competing on the international stage is a huge thing. That is a very good example. I shared everything I learned with them during our training,” he said.

With regards to international time, most of the Gilas players and prominent players in the school draw their talents in Korea and Japan.

When Tamayo was asked about taking his talent abroad? Nor did he close the door. But for now, all he wants is to bring another title to UP.

“For now, I’m just focused on UP, trying to help the team win the championship again,” he said. “Playing abroad, I will never close the door to play abroad. But I think, for now, I’m on UP, to play at UP. “

Tamayo also enjoyed their experience in South Korea, where they spent some time building up to the title win starting Saturday with La Salle at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“When you go to other countries and play basketball and their culture, it’s really different. It has had a huge impact on us. We try to take in the nice culture they have. The team realized how far away we were from their level,” he said. “But after our trip to Korea, I think we have learned a lot and improved as a team as well as as individuals.”
