Woman, 32 years old Mandeep Kauralso sent some videos to her family over a period of time, captured on CCTV, recorded domestic violence she suffered. A mother of two girls, she was accused of torture because she was “unable to have a son” as well as carrying an inadequate dowry.
In one of the unverified videos widely shared on social media, her husband, Ranjodhbeer Singh, can be seen shoving her while their two young daughters are crying in the background and shouting up: “Papa, na maro mumma nu (Dad, please don’t hit mom)”.
Kaur, in one of the last clips she sent to her family in India, says, “My husband assaulted me repeatedly. He had an illicit relationship with several women… (my father) ) filed a police complaint against him in India, but he begged and asked me to save him… and I did. At first, I thought he was going to fix himself, but the atrocities keep increasing. I can’t take it anymore. I’m about to kill myself… Forgive me. , dad.”
The video has sparked anger in both the US and India. It is widely shared by the Kaur Movement, an organization that works for victims of sex and family abuse with a focus on the Sikh community. Soon after, there were online campaigns searching for ‘Justice for Mandeep’ and the hashtag became trending on Twitter.

Kaur, of the village of Taharpur in Bijnor, and Singh, from neighboring Badiya, married in 2015 – both families are farmers – before moving to New York in 2018. Singh then started a shipping business. download in Richmond. Kaur lived there on a tourist visa; It is not clear what visa Singh was issued with. She committed suicide on August 1 by hanging.
After the incident, Kaur’s family applied for FIR in Bijnor. SHO Ravindra Singh Verma said, “Police have registered a case against the defendant’s father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law under Section 498A (cruelty), 306 (aiding for Suicide), 323 (voluntarily causing injury), and 342 (wrongful detention) of the IPC and sections of the Dowry Prevention Act. The case was registered based on the complaint of the victim’s father”.
A separate case was registered against Singh in New York and he was arrested there. The lawsuit filed by Kaur’s father says: “Shortly after my daughter’s wedding, Ranjodhbeer and his family members started demanding Rs 25 lakh dowry. When I was unable to fulfill their demands, they started torturing my daughter. Talks have been held several times to sort things out. But the cruelty has not stopped.”
