Canelo Sees No Value in Benavidez Battle & Charlo Says Eddie Hearn

Via Jim Calfa: Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez doesn’t see David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo as matches that will bring him any value because they will be voluntary title defenders, who promoter Eddie Hearn said.

Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) enjoys fighting for world titles just as he is doing on May 7 against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs).

That’s why Canelo wants Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) and Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) to play against each other, so he can face the winner of those two, and it will. meaningful to him.

Benavidez had volunteered to take on Charlo, but didn’t have any interest in taking on the two-time former WBC 168-lb champion.

Canelo vs. Bivol = HUGE match

Hearn believes Canelo’s 175lb Bivol WBA title fight on May 7 will be a big one, but it’s unclear if it will match the interest from the Mexico star’s last two games against Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders or not.

“He’s the biggest star in the one-mile sport, and it’s been a really good fight,” said Eddie Hearn. iFL TV in the fight between Canelo and Bivol on May 7. “When you look at Dmitry Bivol, you see a very fresh fighter and a very talented engine.

“I think it will be a really tough fight for him [Bivol]. Canelo is ready for it, Eddy Reynoso is ready for it, and I can’t wait for May 7, T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It will be a tough fight for not only Bivol but for Canelo as well as he has to face a pure boxer.

Canelo hasn’t fought anyone with Bivol’s boxing and movement skills in a long time.

“Although I have been a co-promoter before at events in Las Vegas, I was never a lead promoter at T-Mobile. I did Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand with Devin Haney, but T-Mobile is launching us on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

“We’re going to blow off the absolute roof of Las Vegas that weekend and really nice people. We are fortunate to be involved with Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo sees no value in the war between Benavidez and Charlo

If Canelo doesn’t see value in fighting talented boxers like Benavidez & Charlo without them owning the title, that’s his hang.

Those guys will probably beat everyone that Canelo has fought over the past four years, knocking down.

Especially Benavidez will completely destroy Canelo’s recent opponents, Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Caleb Plant, Avni Yildirim and Sergey Kovalev.

“He likes to fight where there’s some kind of reward inside of it,“Hearn said when told that Canelo said he wanted David Benavidez and Jermall Charlo to fight each other to win the match against him.

“Forget finance. That’s another thing Canelo did that; he won it. So when you talk about fighting Charlo or Benavidez, they voluntarily defend his 168 lb title.

Hearn said of Canelo: “The last time he volunteered to defend was four years. “So, I don’t think he sees the value in fighting them other than getting a payday or whatever. But with Bivol, it is moving forward and facing another champion.

“He had an obsession with fighting champions for their belts,” Hearn said of Canelo’s hunger for the belt. “It’s pretty easy to see.

“Daniel Jacobs, beat him for the belt, Sergey Kovalev, hit him for the belt, Callum Smith, hit him for the belt, Billy Joe Saunders, hit him for the belt, Caleb Plant, hit him him for the belt, and now he’s fighting Dmitry Bivol.

“It was his run, and it appealed to him,” Hearn said of Canelo’s obsession with winning the world championship. “With Gennadiy Golovkin, it’s a little bit different because he knows it’s the biggest fight in the sport and that’s the fight he personally wants,” Hearn said.

Murata could face Canelo in September

It’s hard to imagine Golovkin losing to Ryota Murata on April 9, as the Japanese boxer lost to Hassan N’Dam and Rob Brant.

Golovkin will have to be completely shot for losing to a weak champion like Murata, but anything is possible.

“Personally, I don’t think they like each other, but they have to get through the next battles,” Hearn said.

“A big day for DAZN yesterday where you announced May 7 for Bivol and also April battle with Gennady Golovkin.

“So you’ve got a March and April on DAZN, and if those two win, they’ll meet in September.

“Not by contract, but possible,” Hearn said when asked if Ryota Murata would face Canelo on September 17 if the Japanese boxer beat Golovkin on April 9 in their match in Saitama , Japan.

“Look, the plan is for Canelo Alvarez to fight Dmitry Bivol and Gennady Golovkin, but anything can happen in boxing,” Hearn said.

“It was a very tough fight for Canelo. It was a pretty tough match for Golovkin, but it was in Japan, so anything is possible,” Hearn said of GGG’s match against WBA middleweight champion Murata (16-2, 13). KOs).

Bivol’s WBA title will be at stake

It would be a real disappointment for Canelo if the World Boxing Association decided not to sanction his fight with Bivol for his 175lb title.

Losing Bivol’s chance to fight for the WBA title would be a huge disappointment for Canelo, and he has to hope the sanctioning body doesn’t take that action.

“Surname [WBA] not yet stripped of the championship. Personally, know Dmitry Bivol for four or five years and he’s worked his whole life for this moment, he lives in the US pretty much.

“He had a visa and trained here. There’s no real sense in commenting on the situation because you can never win. I understand both sides of the argument.

“It’s a political argument, and I think Canelo summed it up best yesterday when he said, ‘I’m a boxer, I want to challenge the best.’

“Obviously, the next question is, when will Oleksandr Usyk be ready to fight [Anthony Joshua]? You just don’t know, do you? Is this something that will end in two weeks, or is this something that will last for 20 years? I have no idea.

“So we will follow the guidance of the governing bodies and we will expect a great battle,” Hearn said of the Canelo vs. Bivol.

Canelo and Hearn need to be prepared for anything that involves the WBA choosing not to sanction the fight. It’s still a great fight regardless without Bivol’s WBA title, so Canelo shouldn’t be too upset if it’s not threatened.
