Via Sean Jones: Coach Jose Benavidez Sr. said Canelo Alvarez was “scared” of fighting his son David Benavidez because he knew he would lose to him. Jose believes 31-year-old Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) has lost focus on boxing because he plays golf regularly, has multiple side businesses and is rich beyond imagination.
Benavidez Sr. As an unhappy camper, there’s nothing that Canelo seems to have changed in his son over the past four years since moving to 168 in 2018.
On Wednesday, it was revealed that Canelo is on the verge of singing a match two, 85 million dollars Guaranteed deal for him to face Dmitry Bivol on May 7 and Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17th.
Golovkin, once a great boxer, turned 40 in April and has only fought three times in the past four years.
The only quality man Golovkin has played since 2018, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, almost beat him.
To show how much Golovkin had lost from his game, Jermall Charlo fought Derevyanchenko shortly after and easily defeated him.
Benavidez Sr. would have preferred David as one of the two fighters Canelo is up against this year instead of Bivol or Golovkin, but unfortunately that’s not going to happen.
So instead of facing the hungry lion cub of former two-time WBC super-middleweight champion Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs), Canelo is less of a threat, according to Benavidez Sr.
Canelo will have to fight Benavidez

“Canelo can jump to 175. If he stays at 168, he has to fight David. Not available [other way]. Everyone wants that fight. I believe that the more experienced David becomes and the more years he goes by, the more dangerous he will become for Canelo,” said Benavidez Sr.
If Canelo were at 168, he wouldn’t have to go up against Benavidez as he would have an endless supply of beatable candidates that he would be able to put up against well in his 40s. None of them are risky battles for Canelo.
Benavidez is up against David Lemieux for next in a 168th place knock-out of the WBC title, but that could prove to be a waste of his time.
Canelo could always quit the WBC if the sanctioning agency tried to force him against Benavidez, and he likely will.
“It’s time for Canelo to fight David because otherwise he’ll just get stronger,” said Benavidez Sr. “I don’t think there is a chance against David. He didn’t want to fight David because he knew he was hungry.
“He knows he’s a dangerous fight for him right now because it’s business now. I don’t blame him for that. I think he wants to win and get paid. He will not fight David; he doesn’t want to fight David.
“David is only 25 years old. [Canelo] will have to retire. Hopefully he doesn’t stay at 168 because he’ll feel the pressure he has against David.
If David had to get down to 175, he would still be there,” said Benavidez Sr. on Canelo said.
It will be interesting if Benavidez chooses to follow Canelo up to 175. The moment for Benavidez to move to 175 is NOW because if he can get his hands on one of the titles in light heavyweight, he will have it. Perfect bait to catch him in the end.
That idea might fail if Benavidez can’t beat 175-lb IBF/WBC champion Artur Beterbiev or WBO champion Joe Smith Jr.
Benavidez Sr: Canelo is David’s SCARED
“When you say that he [Benavidez] nothing to offer, that tells me they’re scared,” Benavidez Sr. said “You don’t want to fight him. They don’t want to risk losing. I feel happy to hear that because if he doesn’t have that much easy money then payday.
“There will be no doubt in everyone’s mind. Once you defeat David, you are the King. If he’s so permissive, why don’t you come and arrest him? You make history,” said Benavidez Sr.
It looks like Canelo is scared of Benavidez, but that doesn’t change anything. Even if Canelo fears Benavidez, he can’t force him to give him a fight.
“Canelo, I don’t think he is as focused as he was a year ago,” said Benavidez Sr. said “He’s making a lot of money; he has all the other businesses. He is playing golf. You can only be good at one thing. So for now, I think his passion is golf.
“It was a distraction. We focus 100% on boxing. You cannot do everything. I believe there are distractions there, so that’s an advantage for us.
“It’s that he doesn’t want to be in that fight. He knows David 100% is boxing, and he’s a bit distracted by other things. Plus, he’s getting older,” said Benavidez Sr.

“So who was he actually fighting? These people are on their way out,” Benavidez Sr. aforementioned Canelo is battling a bunch of veterans and paper champions. “Why not fight a lion cub?
“That tells me something. Why doesn’t he want to fight David Benavidez? Because they knew he was a dangerous fighter. Why not fight David Benavidez? Why?
“Canelo knew, and Eddy Reynoso knew they couldn’t beat David. There’s a huge chance he could lose. It was a very dangerous war. So why that war? He can do these other battles where he will be guaranteed pay.
“If you ask a Mexican if he [Canelo] a great Mexican champion, they will tell you otherwise. He will not earn the respect of the Mexican people until he fights challengers willing to go against him.
“When you’re champion, you’ll have all these young challengers going to want to fight you, and you have to fight them.
“Now what they do is pick their opponents against whoever they think they are going to win. In the eyes of the Mexican people, you will never be a great champion.
“You have to beat the challengers,” said Benavidez Sr, pointing out that Canelo is picking opponents very well.
Canelo doesn’t just fight the old guys, like Benavidez Sr. speak. He’s some oldies like Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev and Daniel Jacobs, but what he’s mostly doing is targeting flawed champions from England and now Eastern Europe.
