Via Sean Jones: Coach Jose Benavidez Sr. said he likes the idea of Canelo Alvarez facing Jermall Charlo next. Jose feels that Canelo has turned into a “business” someone who is focused on making money and doesn’t care about his legacy despite what he and his trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso claim.
You could argue that if Canelo and Reynoso were serious about building a legacy, they wouldn’t be trying to go against Ilunga Makabu. They won’t fight Avni Yildirim and invest all 2021 battle paper champions at 168.
Benavidez Sr. says he feels that WBC middleweight champion Jermall (32-0.22 KOs) is very vulnerable. He’s not a 168-pound man like Canelo; he is weaker and less dedicated.
Jose Sr. say that Charlo is “Drink” and “Party” more and doesn’t show as much dedication as Canelo to his career. Moreover, Jermall is not as dynamic as Canelo.
Jermall Charlo only fights ONCE a year
Over the past two years, Jermall has only fought ONCE a year. Charlo has transformed into another Gary Russell Jr, with him defending his title only every year instead of two to three times a year.
When a boxer only fights once a year, it’s very difficult to stay sharp, and we’ve seen Charlo’s ring rust in his bout during his lackluster performances against Juan Macias Montiel , Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Matt Korobov.
There has been a drop from Jermall’s performances since 2019. His last impressive attempt was against Hugo Centeno Jr. in 2018.

“The fight between Canelo and Charlo, I think it’s a good fight for Canelo because they became businessmen now,” Benavidez Sr. talk to Fighthype.
They know how to choose and now they are in that position to fight whoever they want to fight,” said Benavidez Sr. talks about Canelo and his coach/manager Eddy Reynoso carefully choosing opponents.
“They don’t really care about making history and are there. It’s about money,“Benavidez talks about Canelo not really fighting to strengthen his legacy, as Reynoso claims.
“I think the bigger fight right now is David [Benavidez] against Canelo because everyone wants to see that fight, and Canelo doesn’t want to fight him.
“Now, Canelo wants to fight Charlo because he’s a little guy. He’s never fought at 168, and Charlo wants to fight Canelo. It’s a payday. I like both fighters and I like their style,” said Jose Jr.
Money goes to Canelo & Reynoso if they pick Jermall for the next fight and it’s a winable side.
Given that Jermall is now fighting every year, he’s not as sharp as he used to be and he may be enjoying his money a little bit. It happens to a lot of fighters that make millions of dollars.
They stopped fighting as often as before, and they became average fighters. We’ve seen that with Keith Thurman and many other boxers. They get rich, and they stop fighting so often.
Benavidez Sr. says Jermall to “drink” and “party”
“I think Canelo has the advantage [over Jermall] because Canelo has been active and it’s stronger, “Benavidez Sr.“ Charlo, they don’t look good. They’re going through some stuff.
“People don’t know. In my opinion, I see them [Jermall] Drink a little more and party a little more. They are not dedicated. Canelo is dedicated.
“Canelo is an older guy, a a little more specialized, and then he has more advantage when negotiating. ‘You’ll have to come up with this weight.’
“He [Canelo] there’s more to it than he asked for, and he has all the advantages. So it’s a good fight for Canelo, but not for Charlo. I think Canelo is going to be in this fight, in my opinion,” Benavidez Sr said, alluding to the rehydration and weightlifting provisions Alvarez has used in the past.
If Jermall is enjoying his time off the ring, like Benavidez Sr. said, he probably won’t play well against Canelo, who is always training.
Canelo has an easier path against Charlo
“It’s going to be an interesting fight, and it’s going to be a really good fight,” said Benavidez Sr. talking about the Canelo vs. Jermall.
“But when you put David against Canelo, a young man we haven’t even dated yet and we’re ready and focused. All has been arranged.
“What David went through was a blessing, and he has grown. Now he knows. People say, ‘He’s not making weight.’ Only once did he not gain weight. All other times, he’s gaining weight.
“In their mind, it’s there, so they try and talk about that. He is concentrating; he is a dangerous fighter,” said Jose Sr. talk about Benavidez. “He’s more of a man now; he is super dedicated and makes a lot of sacrifices.
“So that’s what the Canelo team saw. That’s why they want to go the other way [Charlo].
“I didn’t pay attention to it,” Benavidez Jr said on Canelo reportedly signed a one-match contract to take on Jermall Charlo. “Canelo worked very hard and gave their all for their lives. He deserves what he got.
Charlo deserves all he has, and Canelo deserves all he has. They were here before us [David Benavidez]. They deserve every penny they have. I congratulate them, and I am happy for them.
“I enjoyed watching that fight, but I tried not to know what they were doing,” said Benavidez Sr.
It is clear that Canelo has replaced David Benavidez the longest. That won’t change. It is a constant, and it will not change.
Charlo doesn’t want to fight Benavidez
“There’s a reason why Charlo doesn’t want to fight David [Benavidez],” Jose Benavidez Jr told Fighthype. “I know that the war is a very dangerous war for us.
“I don’t know if we’re ready. We probably will. We don’t know until we fight, but we’re willing to take that risk. It’s a big risk, but we’re willing to do it. I contacted them [Team Charlo]but they don’t want to do that.
“The same thing with Canelo. We tried to contact him when David [the WBC super middleweight] champion. They do not care. We let it pass, and then when David lost his belt, he [Canelo] interested in fighting for 168.
“In a way, I feel happy when they [Canelo and Jermall] don’t want to fight him [Benavidez] because they respect him. They see David as a dangerous fighter, and I don’t think they 100% that they will defeat him.
“So that’s why they didn’t want to fight him. If they thought he was an easy boxer, they would knock him down immediately. Easy money right? “Benavidez Sr. talks about Canelo and Jermall, showing fear towards David by not trying to fight him.
“So for me, I’m glad they don’t want to fight him. If that happens, it will happen. If not, we will continue to work hard. Al Haymon is taking really good care of David.
“I am very happy with what he is doing. If he has to fight a little more to get that wallet, no problem. We will gain more experience,” said Jose Sr of Benavidez.
If Canelo wanted to fight Benavidez, he could have done it now. He has plenty of opportunities to replace Benavidez for Yildirim, Caleb Plant, Rocky Fielding, Billy Joe Saunders, or Callum Smith.
