Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol = Eddie Hearn’s Dream Fight on May 7

Via Sean Jones: Canelo Alvarez and his trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso will make Eddie Hearn VERY pleased if they choose his boxer Dmitry Bivol as their next opponents on May 7.

Hearn promotes WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) and he thinks he’ll be the DANDY pick for Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) head-to-head during the Cinco break de Mayo at the weekend.

Bivol is not an option for Canelo as he would have a great chance of beating him. That right rules out any possibility of Bivol fighting Alvarez.

Since 2018, Canelo has been fighting gimmes strictly, and his fighting with a live dog in Bivol.

Canelo has yet to let the cat out of the bag on his next pick, but has a strong belief that he will disappoint the boxing public.

The name that is constantly emerging as Canelo’s next opponent is the WBC weekly champion Ilunga Makabu, a shaky belt-holder who is unknown to casual boxing fans, but is remembered by die-hard fans for his third-round knock-out loss to Tony Bellew in 2016.

If Canelo wanted to make himself the villain in the eyes of fans, he’d pick Jake Paul and stick the fight with PPV.

You can only imagine uproar that would happen if Canelo chooses Jake as his next enemy. Sean Jones doesn’t pass Canelo. I mean, Alvarez has let his fans down continuously since 2018 after his bad experience against Gennady Golovkin.

The second clash with GGG took something away from Canelo regarding his willingness to return to the ring over the objections of his superiors.

Since the Golovkin rematch, Canelo has focused on winning the belt against the 168 paper champions and beating older boxers like Sergey Kovalev and Daniel Jacobs.

Since that fight, it’s all been a softer protest for Canelo. Heck, Canelo even stooped to the point of fighting with ex-partner Avni Yildrim in 2021, a boxer who hasn’t fought in TWO years and is about to lose to Anthony Dirrell.

Yildirim is said to be on par with Jake Paul in terms of talent, and Canelo has no problem fighting him.

That’s why you can’t rule out Canelo choosing to take on Jake as he seems to be heading for the lowest common denominator at this stage of his career.

Hearn wants Canelo vs. Next Bivol

Canelo is tied here because he can’t turn to the 168-lb division and use it as a foxhole to hide from quality opposition.

Canelo has no more super-middleweight paper champions to fight as he has beaten three British boxers and American Caleb Plant.

If Canelo remains at 168, boxing fans will expect him to go up against David Benavidez, and it will be a very, very tough fight for him.

The moment for Canelo to take on Benavidez was in 2018 when he was still at the peak of the game, more or less after his controversial win over Golovkin.

But now, after three years in a row battling weak opposition in the form of Yildirim, Kovalev, Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders, Plant, Rocky Fielding, and Callum Smith, Canelo’s skills have faded to the point where he’s gone. could be defeated by Benavidez or David Morrell Jr.

“It depends on what Canelo wants to do and what department he wants to fight,” Eddie Hearn told. DAZN Boxing Show when asked if Alvarez would face off against WBO heavyweight champion Joe Smith Jr. on May 7 or not.

“I was quite saying that I want to meet him [Canelo] fight Dmitry Bivol next, and then maybe Joe Smith and then [Artur] Beterbiev, then cleared 175,” Hearn said of wanting Alvarez to fight one of the promoted boxers in his Matchroom Boxing in Bivol.

“I think with Canelo, anything is possible. I think he and Eddy Reynoso will talk and come up with a plan, and we’ll look at the options. It will really come down to what excites him [Canelo].

“Did Joe Smith excite him? Maybe, but Dmitry Bivol might excite him more because Dmitry Bivol comfortably beat Joe Smith when they canned [in March 2019].

“That was a few years ago [three years], but he’s still undefeated, Bivol, and he’s already beaten Joe Smith. It’s a fight that can be done pretty easily,” Hearn said.

There’s Not Much Science Behind Canelo & Reynoso’s Choice

“Like I said, this is a really unique setup for Eddy [Reynoso] and Saul,” Hearn said. “So close that Eddy would drive around there, answer the phone and literally make all the choices, and they would go, ‘He.’

There isn’t much scientific research on it. It depends on feeling and passion, legacy and motivation. That’s what they want to do. I don’t think they’re interested in just going into a war that doesn’t really do anything for them.

“I think he would choose Bivol over Smith,” Hearn said, predicting that Canelo would rather face WBA 175-lb champion Bivol than WBO champion Joe Smith Jr on May 7. “It was a match. achievement.

“But then, of course, the fight with Joe Smith could follow. People are making their choices and saying, ‘Do you want to do this?’

“I think that’s what he [Canelo] will pass. I hope he makes a decision soon.

“I know that Eddy responded to Mike Coppinger stuff saying they weren’t negotiating, but we had conversations over the weekend that weren’t too in-depth.

“I know they’re thinking about doing a follow-up fight and it’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks,” Hearn said.

Yes, Canelo will decide soon because he has no other choice, but his choice will be a disappointment. If nothing else, Canelo has been predictable in his career, and his picks will continue to upset fans.

Sean Jones believes Canelo’s change will be for the better. I hope Canelo picks Jake Paul or Makabu next because it fits the pattern he shows with his opponent pick. If it weren’t for them, Canelo would pick the winner of the Jacobs vs John Ryder match.
