Canelo Alvarez lifts weights hard for May match

Via Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez lifts weights to power up for his next bout on Cinco de Mayo in May in what is expected to be a title defense against an Eddie Hearn-promoted opponent John Ryder.

Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) was seen on video doing some heavy squares with 400 lbs, trying to give strength to his skinny legs. With such a weight, there is always a risk of knee injury, and hopefully, the Mexican star does not get injured.

Given how Canelo let off the gas in his last two games against Gennadiy Golovkin, 40, and Dmitri Bivolhe needs cardio to build up his stamina.

Heavy weightlifting will be detrimental to Canelo as it can slow him down and not help his cardio.

If Canelo is to have any chance of beating Bivol, he has to boost his poor fitness as he was exhausted in the third round last May.

Interestingly, Bivol was in first place in the entire fight, which went easy and didn’t accelerate the red-haired superstar’s pace.

In the only instance when Bivol switched to number two, he nearly brought Canelo to a halt in the fifth round as he unleashed a series of seven furious punches.

Referee Russell Mora is watching closely, looking ready to intervene. If Canelo doesn’t change his mind in the rematch with Bivol, there’s a chance he’ll be knocked out as Dmitry will likely throw more punches.

Canelo’s Matchroom boxing promoter, Hearn, wanted to bring him to the UK to expand his international appeal in front of a British audience in a bout against Brit Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs).

“John [Ryder] to be [WBO] obligatory challenger. He is the perfect fight for Saul to do as he says, run in front of Dmitry Bivol,” Eddie Hearn told DAZN . boxing program.

Ryder would be the perfect fight for Canelo if he were to face a competitor at 168 or 175, but he completely wasted his time preparing for a rematch with Bivol. His fighting style is completely different from Bivol’s, and it won’t help Canelo beyond fattening his wallet.

“The plan is for Canelo to be John Ryder and then Dmitry Bivol if he succeeds,” Hearn said. “He [Canelo] want to break boundaries. He wants to fight on the international stage. It will be an incredible atmosphere and a great occasion.”
