Via Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez has a big decision to make when it comes to two offers from Matchroom Boxing and PBC for its next game on May 7. Eddie Hearn has offered Canelo a two-on-one deal, and he hopes to do so. get an answer from the Mexican star next week.
Hearn is offering Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) promotion to 175 to challenge WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) on May 7 and Gennadiy Golovkin (41-0) -1.36 KOs) ) later this year on September 17.
Jermall Charlo = Great choice for Canelo
PBC’s offer was a simple showdown for Canelo against Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs). It was a match that resonated with US boxing fans who are all too familiar with the famous Charlo and would be delighted to see Canelo fight him.
Super middleweight David Benavidez likely won’t be happy if Charlo rises to 168 and pulls off a fight he’s been trying to achieve for years. Charlo has also been waiting for years, and he has been overtaken by Canelo many times.
Ordinarily, one would say that Jermall was an entrant to get the fight against Canelo, but the Mexican star is very close to Eddie Hearn. Canelo’s friendship with Hearn may have been enough for him to accept his offer to fight the two Bivol and Golovkin.
The third pick for Canelo was the one his good coach/manager Eddy Reynoso gave him to move up to cruiserweight to take on WBC champion Ilunga Makabu for his title.
It’s unlikely that Canelo takes on Makabu, but there’s the possibility of winning the fifth-place world championship and facing someone who has very little chance of beating him.
There’s little risk for Canelo fighting Makabu, but otherwise, he won’t be recognized for defeating him. Unfortunately, the casual boxing fan has never heard of Makabu, and die-hard fans aren’t impressed with him.
Bivol will be a risky fight for Canelo
Tim Bradley believes Bivol will be a brutal fight for Canelo and can defeat him. Due to the risks of fighting Bivol, Canelo must carefully consider whether he is ready to take on a talented fighter of his own.
The past four years have been virtually risk-free for Canelo, thanks to him strategically choosing to enhance his résumé. If Canelo decides to go through with the two-way deal offered by Hearn’s Matchroom, he will face Bivol next May, followed by Golovkin in September.
“Bivol could be a problem for Alvarez,” Tim Bradley told ESPN. “Alvarez loves facing opponents that stand in front of him, and he has a unique way of getting them through early and hard.
“But you can make Alvarez miss, and if you can make him pay For every miss, you have a chance. Bivol is a fighter that I believe can do that.
“Bivol is bigger and longer than Alvarez. He showed great fundamentals, a great touch, footwork, great position and he counter-attacked often enough to earn respect.
There is no doubt in my mind that Bivol will let Alvarez make money,Bradley said.
