Via Sean Jones: Legendary coach Nacho Beristain says he’s unimpressed with what he sees from Canelo Alvarez in his fights, and that he doesn’t consider him the greatest Mexican boxer of all time.
Like many, Beristain was undeterred by the opposition that Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) was facing. He’s never in any match considered a 50-50 or even a 60-40 match.
Canelo is fighting those who have no chance of defeating him, and the reason for that is that he chooses weaker opponents. Yes, they are champions, but only in name.

Quality boys like David Benavidez, David Morrell Jr, Demetrius Andrade, Artur Beterbiev and Jermall Charlo will allow Canelo to impress the fans.
However, he wouldn’t fight them, or at least he didn’t. I don’t know what Canelo was waiting for because he was supposed to fight them.
Beristain: Canelo lacks a career-defining fight
“I realized that he is a great boxer and an athlete because he trains so well and is his coach. [Eddy Reynoso] Prepared him very well, but I disagree with that,” legendary coach Nacho Beristain told Against TV Hub in giving his thoughts on how Canelo Alvarez is NOT one of the greatest boxers of Mexican boxing.

“I realize he’s a good fighter, but there’s still a little more he needs to do loved by Mexican boxing fans. What’s missing is a fight or two like the one Julio Cesar Chavez had and others.
“He fights, and he keeps fighting, but personally, as a multi-boxer trainer, he doesn’t complete me. He didn’t have a real fight to win people’s hearts.
“He fights and wins and wins millions of dollars, and that’s good; that makes me so happy he’s hitting the mark, but he doesn’t have a fight we all want to watch. He doesn’t have it yet,” said Beristain.
There hasn’t been any battle from Canelo where he’s captured people’s hearts, and the reason for that is that he’s failed to put up with the opposition he needs to impress the fans. tomb.

“Because they can fool you and the fans but not me because I spent a lot of time watching boxing,” Beristain said.
Beristain doesn’t say Canelo’s five fights leave much of a doubt, but he may be thinking these things:

- Austin Salmon
- Erislandy Lara
- Sergey Kovalev
Although Canelo stopped Kovalev in their fight in 2019, the way the Russian boxer fought was odd, as if he wasn’t trying very hard.
Fans who have seen Kovalev fight in the past were shocked at how he fought against Canelo. He doesn’t bear the load with his punches and mostly rushes in and moves around the ring with the smaller Canelo. He’s been easy on Canelo.
It’s one of the reasons why you should worry a bit about Canelo’s next fight if he chooses to face WBC heavyweight champion Ilunga Makabu next.
He and Canelo looked too friendly for each other during the WBC convention and looked similar to how Saul and Kovalev interacted before the game.

Alvarez “didn’t go any further,” says Beristain

“I still have hope to see him in a game where he looks sensational,” Beristain said of Canelo. “Because he wins and looks good, but he didn’t go any further. ”
Canelo has never been able to fight hard without much rest after throwing a few punches.
The stamina problems we saw from Canelo earlier in his career when he was in his 20s have become much worse, he is now in his 30s and running at 168 .
If Canelo tries to go the extra kilometer in his match, he will be at his best and will succumb to his objections. But his coach/manager Eddy Reynoso carefully picked a weak opponent at 168 to help him win.
Reynoso was wise enough not to push Canelo by pairing him with someone who could cause him problems and make him feel low on stamina like David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo and Artur Beterbiev.
You could argue that Reynoso treats Canelo as if he were an old car with 300,000 miles on it. When you get an old car, you can’t push it too hard without breaking it and needing repair.
Reynoso saw champions err on the side of the road when going through the 168 lb division and then pointed Canelo in that direction to take advantage of them.
Unsurprisingly Reynoso doesn’t do it at 175 or 160. If Canelo fights at 175, he’ll have to deal with a murderous line of the following killers:
- Artur Betterbiev
- Joe Smith Jr.
- Dmitry Bivol
“Golovkin fights with the slimmest profits they support him. I’m not against foreign warriors, but I want to meet him [Canelo] get him to raise his hand in the right way,” Beristine said.
It seems Beristain doesn’t believe Canelo deserved his controversial win over Golovkin in 2018 or the questionable 12th round draw he was handed in their first game in 2017.

Saul’s fights aren’t as interesting as Pacquiao’s
“Pacquiao, now that’s a guy who deserves the world’s praise because he fought and overcame,” Beristain said. “He brought interesting battles.
“Canelo, no. He wins and knocks people out, and they raise their hands, and he wins tons of money, but he is not convinced. [Yordenis] Ugas did not beat Manny Pacquiao. Time beat Pacquiao. Father time beat Manny. He couldn’t do more,” said Beristain.
There’s no comparison between the way Pacquiao used to fight with his all-out action style compared to Canelo, who always seems to save his energy as someone with a heart problem.
Canelo really can’t fight the way we’ve seen from Pacquiao and Mexican greats like Juan Manuel Marquez, Julio Cesar Chavez and Erik Morales.
What we see from Canelo is a boxer dashing forward, trying to train in single shots and then resting for 20 seconds before launching another big punch.
It would be great if Canelo could fight like Marquez and Chavez, but he can’t.
The way to beat Canelo is to get up to speed by attacking him with relentless punches, but he hasn’t faced anyone who has done that since his second fight with Gennady Golovkin in 2018. .
That fight put an end to Canelo facing quality opposition, as he has had secure opponents ever since.
“Good for the Cuban fighter. He’s good, but in time before that, he won’t be able to beat Manny,” Beristain said of Ugas.
Yordenis Ugas will find it very difficult to play against a younger Pacquiao in his 20s or 30s.
Even Pacquiao, 42, has caused trouble for Ugas. No one is saying that Ugas will beat the younger version of Pacquiao.
The fans just go by what is. Pacquiao got old and got beaten up by a young guy in Ugas, and that’s all anyone cares about.
