Millions of patients die from cancer each year, but a cure for the disease still eludes researchers. Cancer occurs when damaged cells divide and multiply at their own rate, forming tumors. This defect can begin anywhere in the body, but once proliferation has been activated, tumors have the ability to invade nearby tissue. Receiving the warning signs is crucial to survival. According to Dr. Jiri Kubes, of the Praha Proton Therapy Center, a little-known sign can occur in the ear.
As with most forms of cancer, finding the disease in its early stages offers the best chance of survival.
This is especially important for fast-spreading cancers, which are best treated while they are still in the tissue where they grew.
For example, neck cancer can start anywhere in the body, because it spreads through the blood or the lymphatic system, to other parts of the body.
“The sooner we can get people diagnosed, the better the outcome,” said Dr.

“But even though it is the fastest growing cancer in the world, there is still a lack of awareness about head and neck tumors.”
In fact, head and neck cancer rates are thought to be on the rise in part because of higher rates of human papillomavirus infection.
This causes the cells in the back of the throat to become abnormal, which is a key feature of cancer.
Because head and neck cancer tumors often reside in the nose, neck, or throat, it’s only natural for you to have symptoms in these areas. However, some lesser-known signs may manifest elsewhere.

Dr. Kubes added: “There are a number of key symptoms you need to look out for, some of which are less well known.
“For example, a persistently clogged ear – the kind you get after diving in a swimming pool – or a persistent earache could be a sign that there is cancer in and around that area.
“Swelling in part of the neck or some resistance to touching part of the neck can also be a sign.
“Gingivitis, ulcers and toothaches, and white or red patches in the mouth are all noticeable symptoms.”
“A sore throat that persists for more than two weeks, or if you experience a change in your voice or hoarseness, you should ring the alarm bell.”
Fortunately, many head and neck cancers can be cured if caught early.
Removing the cancer is the main goal of treatment and should be done without interfering with nearby nerves, organs, and tissues.
Treatments for the disease usually include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, but a combination of treatments may be needed.
