Canadians named Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis is the new HC
Montreal Canadians appointed former NHLer Martin St. Louis as their interim head coach, the team announced on Wednesday. The announcement comes just hours after Dominique Ducharme stepped down from his duties as head coach.
General Manager Kent Hughes said: “We are delighted to welcome Martin to Canadianiens. in a statement. “We’re not just adding an outstanding hockey player, but with Martin we’re delivering a proven winner and a man of competitive quality that has been surpassed by all. through his path of recognition.”
St. Louis, 46, is not expected to speak to the media until Thursday, before Montreal’s game against the Washington Capitals.
The retired winger has scored 1,033 points (391 goals, 642 assists) in 16 seasons playing for the Calgary Flames, New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning. He was part of the team that won the Lightning’s Stanley Cup in 2004.
It’s still unclear St. Louis, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018, will help turn the tide on repressed habits. Montreal is currently the worst team in the league thanks to a lousy 8-30-7 record and a complete lack of consistency following the truncated 2021 season, which saw them feature in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since. since 1993.
The Canadian plans to “reassess things” at the end of the season on whether St. Will Louis be behind the bench after the 2022 season, according to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.
As of Wednesday morning, the assistant coaching staff that worked with Ducharme remained in place. There is no word yet on whether they will stay where St. Louis took over or not.
