Can Lomachenko beat Haney? Teddy Atlas Battle Preview

Via Jim Calfa: Teddy Atlas reckons Vasyl Lomachenko is engaged in a “tough fight” against the much older and younger undisputed lightweight champion Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney.

Lomachenko and Haney could meet in the first half of next year, as long as negotiations go smoothly. Loma told Haney & ESPN he’ll need time to prepare, but he didn’t say how much.

If Lomachenko talks about being ready in the second half of 2023, he could miss the boat as Haney is likely already up to 140 by then. Currently, Haney looks too big for the 135-lb class, and it may not be safe for him to stay in this weight class much longer.

Atlas says that the clock of former world third-place champion Lomachenko, 34, is ticking, and he will be up against one of the top boxers like undefeated Haney (29-0, 15 KOs), he should do it now.

Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) looked quaint in his final game, yelled at by Jamaine Ortiz by a unanimous decision in the 12th round on October 29 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Although the referees gave Lomachenko scores 116-112, 117-111 and 115-113, many boxing fans saw it as a draw or victory for Ortiz.

The problem is, Lomachenko will not be in good form if the 26-year-old Jamaine cannot shine in the championship rounds because he is dominated in the first half of the round. It was Ortiz’s speed, size, strength, and skill that made Lomachenko look ahead early on.

“I love Loma so much, if he’s going to fight a top guy, he better do it immediately and don’t have to wait any longer because the clock is ticking and it’s still ticking,” said Teddy Atlas The struggletalks about a potential clash between Devin Haney and Vasyl Lomachenko in 2023.

Lomachenko’s career is about to explode if he is in 135th after the Haney game as he is too young and old to mix it with the likes of Gervonta ‘The Tank’ Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Michel Rivera, Frank Martin and Keyshawn Davis.

Those guys were supposed to be the top fighters in the lightweight division, and they were all younger, bigger, and faster than Lomachenko. What Lomachenko should do is drop to 130 or preferably 126 if he loses to Haney next year.

Even if Lomachenko beats Haney, he should still lose weight because he’s too small for the 135 lb division. If Lomachenko were in lightweight, he would have watched his career fade away as he lost to all the top lions.

It will be an uphill fight for Loma,” Atlas said. “If he plays against Haney, and that’s the best chance. Haney is the best chance as he is forced to make a deal with Top Rank to get the fight with Kambosos. Temporarily leave Hearn and go with Top Rated because that’s how it works in boxing.

“He was forced to do it. So now he ended up on that team, and because he ended up on that team with the Top Rank, he can now fight Lomachenko. So the best shot because it was to see Haney and Loma,” Atlas said.

“Did you see the size difference when Haney was in the ring with Lomachenko?” Ken Rideout, an assistant at Atlas said. “Lomachenko even looked at him and said, ‘Are you underweight?’ He looks huge. He must be 170 pounds tall. He looks like a monstrous giant next to Lomachenko. Even Lomachenko commented.”

Atlas said: “I know he is older. “Everybody is bigger than Lomachenko. Lomachenko started at featherweight, went to junior light, then lightweight, so let’s not forget that. “

“I know, but how big does Haney look?” Rideout said.

Haney really looks like a rehydrated average weight standing next to Lomachenko in the ring. Boxers like WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo rehydrate the 170+ zone for his fights. Except for the lack of height and strength, Haney will have to stay at home to share the ring with Jermall at middleweight.

Atlas said: “Haney, for a skeleton, there’s a lot of meat on those skeletons, no doubt, and he’s bigger. “Listen, he’s good, and he believes.

“He will find out late in the fight. He knew late in the fight about what he had to do and what he could do, and he could rely on himself. But on the contrary, [Jamaine] Ortiz is still uncertain, still not quite solid that way now.

“Now, he may be, but he wasn’t then. He still hasn’t learned the valuable lesson of overcoming the flames. Haney knows the answers to those questions. That and besides his physical abilities, besides his size, the ability to control the outside and the time Loma comes in.

“It will be an interesting fight and a difficult one. The battle with the Tanks would be a hell of a battle, and Ryan Garcia would, but those guys aren’t on the team. They’re not on that team.

“You know what? Fans, we’re out of luck, but Haney [vs. Lomachenko] Atlas said.

“I think we’ll get there,” Rideout said. “I really think we’ll get there, I do.”

“Because of him [Haney] right team. It’s like the old days, back to the days when the guys ran everything in the neighborhoods. If you.

“If you want a cigarette machine, a jukebox or a battery ball. If you want them, you should use your machines. What do you know? You better use those machines.

“The same thing with boxing. The only difference is that your stores won’t have fires, but a lawyer will show up at your door and give you a piece of paper. You have to appear in court on the 8th of this month.

“That, if you’re not with the boys, if you’re not with the guys if you’re not with the right team, you’re not going to have a fight. We’re not going to fight, we’re the fans. We do not understand.

“Battle of Haney-Lomachenko, maybe we will end it. It will be interesting, but it will be an extremely tough fight for Loma. But you know what, it’s going to be an uphill fight for both of them,” Atlas said.
