Via Craig Daly: Hector Luis Garcia serves as Saturday’s spoiler, potentially upsetting the grand scheme of things Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis took on Ryan Garcia in April on Showtime PPV in a big fight.
Hector’s best way to win Saturday is to get past Gervonta and beat him with bulk punches the way Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz did in their match in December 2021.
Tank doesn’t throw a lot of punches because of his stocky build and the way he loads up everything he throws.
Unfortunately, for Hector (16-0, 10 KOs) to win Saturday night, he’ll need to overwhelm Tank Davis (27-0, 25 KOs), bring the rounds to a close, or he will need a knockout because he is likely to lose by a controversial decision if the fight is close.
Tank is a superstar fighter and an A in this competition. Furthermore, there’s a big fight coming between Tank and Ryan Garcia, meaning Hector will likely need to do something spectacular for him to land a decisive victory.
A knockout would be the best way for Hector Garcia to put up a roadblock ahead of Gervonta’s fight with Ryan in April, but that’s unlikely.
Southern boxer Hector isn’t a great boxer, and he’s rising from super featherweight when he’s facing a guy with a big chin in Tank Davis.
Hector was not given a chance
“I’m a bit surprised at how skeptical people are about Hector Garcia’s chances in this game. On what date did he pick up that Chris Colbert match, three weeks notice?” Chris Mannix to DAZN’s JABS.
“The battle between Gervonta Davis and Hector Luis Garcia is ongoing after Davis was arrested on domestic violence charges last week. The accuser has since withdrawn and the Showtime pay-per-view between Garcia and Davis will go ahead as scheduled.
“Although Davis is a very popular candidate, Garcia entered this fight with consecutive wins over Chris Colbert and Roger Gutierrez last year. So, how dangerous is Hector Luis Garcia in this fight?
“He beat Chris Colbert, a rising contender at the time, and then went into a duel with Roger Gutierrez and knocked him out. [WBA super featherweight] his short title. Gutierrez is a very solid fighter.
“Yes, Hector Luis Garcia is gaining weight, but if you look at these two guys, Hector is taller and looks bigger if not bigger than Tank Davis. He is also backed by someone who I think deserves to be called coach of the year Bob Santos, who has done an extraordinary job with so many Dominican boxers, including Hector Garcia.
“I think Hector Garcia has to watch out for that big shot. Tank Davis is not a volume puncher. He threw 25 punches in his final win over Rolly Romero, but those punches were the big punches and the only major punches that kept Rolly Romero out.
“I think Hector Garcia has a chance to score in the second half of the game. The important thing is to avoid that massive counterattack. Don’t become something like Mario Barrios or Leo Santa Cruz, or Rolly Romero and get caught.
“If he’s careful and has the right game plan, I think he has a chance to deal with the discomfort,” Mannix said.
Garcia must hurt Tank soon
Sergio Mora talks about what Hector Garcia will have to do to give him a chance to beat Gervonta Davis.
“We saw Tank back off. He fought Romero smartly from the start in those rounds because he knew Romero would have a big punch if he could knock Garcia out and get him stabbing his left arm because it was what he did to Romero.
“That’s what you do with these aggressive, heavy-handed attackers. You let them run into big hits. Tank, he can not only box the energy in the hind leg, but can also go find and knock you out in the front leg.
“I think it all comes down to strategy. How quickly does he want to get this man out? It is a matter of time. Garcia always held her head high; he’s not that fast. He’s strong, but all of that is second only to the fact that his defense and technique, he’s lacking,” Mora said of Hector Garcia.
The boxers missed Hector’s chance
“One thing that surprised me was how much other boxers looked down on Hector Garcia’s chances,” Mannix said. “I spoke to Ryan Garcia about this, who has a definite interest in the outcome of this fight, and he said he doesn’t think too much about Hector Garcia.
“Devin Haney said similar things. He put him in the camp, and he said he would let him home in a day or two. What does that tell you when people familiar with a boxer are passing his chance?” Mannix said.
“Yes, when I watched his video, the first thing I noticed was that he hit his chin very straight, and when he threw his punches, he lost his balance and his chin was still in the air, ‘ Mora talked about Hecto García.
