Can Dmitry Bivol make 168 rematch with Canelo Alvarez?

Via Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn wants to see if Dmitry Bivol can get past 168 to challenge Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title in his next bout.

If Bivol can safely reach the 168 lb limit without draining or putting his health at risk, he has a good chance of becoming the undisputed champion by defeating Canelo.

Hearn says that Bivol’s number one on his hit list, Artur Beterbiev, may not be available to fight him until next September due to his busy schedule.

It’s no surprise that Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs) won’t wait long before he returns to action, and that’s where Canelo will come in. The two could fight in May in a rematch, giving the Mexican star a chance to avenge his loss from last May.

Eddie Hearn said: “I thought Dmitry Bivol was unbelievable, and what a wonderful person he is. iFL TV after Dmitry Bivol’s victory over Gilberto Ramirez.

“Maybe, he doesn’t want to be controversial, but maybe we will look at Canelo Alvarez at 168 for the undisputed,” Hearn said when reminded that Bivol wants to fight for the undisputed 175th against IBF, WBC & WBO light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.

Maybe Dmitry Bivol can create weights. We’ll have to see, and we’ll have to talk to Eddy Reynoso and Saul, the boss, about who they want to fight,” Hearn said.

Canelo probably won’t be pleased to face Bivol at 168 because if he loses he will be demoted as he will claim his undisputed super middleweight championship.

Furthermore, if Canelo loses, it will be bad because the reason he lost the bigger man will be taken out the window.

If it is decided to stay out of competition until September due to surgical repair of his left hand, Bivol could defend his WBA lightweight title against #2 WBA, #2 WBC, #4 WBO and #12 IBF Joshua Buatsi.

Hearn promotes Buatsi, who attended last Saturday night for Bivol’s fight against Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in Abu Dhabi. It won’t be the biggest fight Bivol faces against Buatsi, but it would be a good Plan C if he can’t get Beterbiev or Canelo.

Buatsi will be similar to Craig Richards for Bivol, and it won’t be an uphill fight. The hardest thing for Bivol against Buatsi is that he needs to do it in front of his own England fans in London because that’s the only place it will sell.

US boxing fans in general don’t know who Buatsi is, so they won’t show up in large numbers for a right between him and Bivol.

“Now Dmitry has the right to make his own decisions. He’s become a big star, a big star, a great fighter, and we’ll see what comes next for both of them,” Hearn said.
