Needless to say, the NFL offseason hasn’t gone the way many with the Atlanta Falcons had envisioned. Atlanta seems to be one of those favorite landed star quarterback Deshaun Watson before he unexpectedly dropped his no-trade clause to join the Cleveland Browns, and the Falcons’ public pursuit of the controversial figure result in the story veteran Matt Ryan is exploring his options.
Last Atlanta transport Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts, Signed Marcus Mariota becomes its new starter and then aside a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to take Desmond Ridder, the Cincinnati signal caller. It was assumed that Ridder would learn the pro game watching from the sidelines as Mariota was active, but Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot suggested during an appearance on “Pro Football Talk PM” that the rookie could could land a QB1 gig this summer.
“I would say anywhere on our depth chart it’s all the same that right now we’re going to start camp we’re going to have 90 players competing to be 53 plus 16”, Fontenot explains, following to Mike Florio of PFT. “On a weekly basis, they’ll be competing for a jersey on match day to be one of the 48. That’s really how we see this. We’ll continue to add competition. paintings in every position and that’s what’s really exciting about this one.”
Speaking of the Ridder, Fontenot added:
“[H]He has a chip on his shoulder, he always feels like he has something to prove, and he is one of those people that whether he goes in the first round or the seventh round, he will is the kind of worker that delivers it every day. We were delighted to receive Desmond at the time, excited about the time we spent with him, and we are delighted to bring him here so we can get to work. ”
Teams often use this time of year to claim a proven midfielder will start his first year professionally no matter what happens in training camps and pre-season games. Interestingly, Fontenot failed to do so when given the opportunity less than a week after Ridder joined the club.
