Can Dal alone meet daily protein needs? Here’s what the experts say

Protein plays an important role in creating and maintaining each and every cell of the body. This is required for growth and development in children, pregnant women and adolescents. The human body needs protein to repair cells and create new cells. But do you know how much protein you need to consume daily? There is a common belief that dal or lentils are high in protein. Many people also feel that dal alone can meet their daily protein needs. However, that is not true. Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal explains that dal alone cannot cover the body’s daily protein needs.

In an Instagram post, Nmami Agarwal said that although dal is a good source of protein, it is an incomplete protein. To make it a complete protein source, it needs to be combined with roti or rice.

Nmami adds that the human daily protein requirement is between 45-65gms/day. To meet the daily requirement, a person needs to have four to five bowls of dal in one meal. One bowl provides about 2-3 grams of protein.

So it’s important to include more protein-rich foods in your diet, such as soybeans, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, Nmami says.
