Callum Smith vs Mathieu Bauderlique in WBC knockout for 175-lb . title

Via Barry Holbrook: Eddie Hearn said Callum Smith was asked by the WBC to face 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Mathieu Bauderlique in a 175 lb knockout to determine the required challenger to light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev .

This month, 175-lb IBF/WBC champion Beterbiev (17-0, 17 KOs) will face WBO champion Joe Smith in a unification match on June 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York . Winner Smith versus Bauderlique will face off against winner Beterbiev-Smith.

Hearn says that former WBA super-middleweight champion Smith (28-1, 20 KOs) will fight under the muscle in Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in July or August in Saudi Arabia.

It’s unclear if Callum will fight Bauderlique on Joshua-Usyk II or that fight will happen later along the way.

With the Callum vs Bauderlique fight currently being ordered only by the WBC, there wasn’t much time for Bauderlique to begin preparing for the competition.

You have to assume that Smith already knew he was fighting under Joshua-Usyk 2, so he trained for that.

Smith, 32, is ranked No. 1 with the World Boxing Council and will fight for his second time since moving up to 175 after losing his 168-lb WBA belt to Canelo Alvarez in a one-sided loss in December. 2020.

On Callum’s debut at the age of 175, he stopped former world champion Lenin Castillo in the second round last September on Joshua-Usyk 1’s field at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in London, England.

The lanky 6’3 ″ Smith knocked out Castillo with a single shot in the second round to win the 2008 Olympian from the Dominican Republic.

#2 WBC Mathieu Bauderlique (21-1, 12 KOs) is an 11-year professional athlete from France, with the only two notable wins of his career being against 37-year-old Igor Mikhalkin and 40-year-old Doudou Ngumbu.

Aside from those two victories, Bauderlique fought off obscure opposition throughout his lackluster career.

It sucks that it took him so long to finally get ahead of a big-name opponent because he’s been a pro for so long that he’s faced so many underdogs.

Bauderlique’s only career loss came to Dragan Lepei in the first knockout loss in 2017.

“He will have an AJ card. The WBC just ordered the final sort between him and Mathieu Bauderlique, so we’ll see what happens there,” said Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. Secondsout about Callum Smith being ordered by the WBC to play Mathieu Bauderlique #2 in the final elimination match in 175th place.

“I need to keep him [Smith] positive. He wants to shoot [WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry] Bivol. Of course, everyone does and we’ll see what happens,” Hearn said of Callum.

Smith has to perform a lot better against Bauderlique than he did in a one-way loss to Canelo in 2020 because he won’t win if he fights like that.
