California Task Force votes to limit compensation to descendants of free and enslaved blacks who were in America during the 19th century

It was previously reported that the state of California had set up a task force to help research and calculate compensation claims when it came to black Americans, and now it appears they have found out who would qualify. to receive compensation.

Based on ABC 7 NewsIn a 5-4 vote, the California task force agreed that those who were descendants of enslaved and free Negroes in 19th century America would be eligible for state restitution. .

The task force members, most of whom can trace their families’ legacy to returning to slavery in America, debated who would be eligible to receive the reparations, and how it will be distributed. They also added people whose ancestry arrived in the United States before the 20th century to the list of eligibility due to “possible difficulties in recording family history and the risk of becoming enslaved at that time.”

The eligibility debate also included some arguing that compensation should also be given to “Black people in America who suffer from systemic racism in housing, education, and jobs.”

Based on MSNBC, state officials first set up the task force in 2020, and have since been working to figure out who will receive the money and how they will be granted. The process is said to take a total of two years as the group is expected to meet until 2023.

California will become the first state to offer reparations if the plan is fully implemented.
