In April, a gas station in Chattanooga, Tennessee accidentally fuel sold for 45 cents a gallon. I really think this is going to be a rare oddity and will happen again, especially as gasoline prices in the US are rising to historic highs. However, a gas station in Northern California made the same mistake earlier this week.
A Shell station in Rancho Cordova, California sells gasoline at 69 cents/gallon. Good! As in Tennessee, the valuation error is caused by a misplaced decimal point. The intended price is $6.99 per gallon. Several customers and nearby residents shared the incident on social media. Most notably, Darryl Surita of nearby Sacramento shared a video of him refueling his car on Instagram. He captioned the post, “We have to fight this gas price some way 69 cents a gallon I love this!” Surita said Newsweek:
“I posted it [this] on my Instagram and reply to anyone who messaged me. I called my mother and told her, and called my brother and told him. I thought that was too good to be true until I checked the gas meter on the car and it was full, but it only cost me $14. I filled up my car, left, came back with the second car, filled it up, then left again and came back with my cousin and filled 150 gallons of a 500 gallon tank. The whole gas station was full of cars and people with leftover cans of gas.”
It took three hours for the station manager to resolve the error. Currently, the average price for a gallon of gas in California is $6,434. Gasoline costs nationwide are expected to rise as summer rolls around, but at least some people have had some relief when it comes to gas.
