Via Sean Jones: Jose Benavidez Sr. It was revealed that Caleb Plant was “decline” fight with David Benavidez in September. After defaming WBC super-middleweight 1st place contender Benavidez (25-0.22 KOs), Plant withdrew.
Jose Sr. said they contacted Team Plant and they “refused to fight David Benavidez. ” It took Caleb Plant less than a day to deny his fight with Benavidez after saying a lot of things on social media.
Plant shot himself in the foot by refusing to fight Benavidez because the boxing world would notice this and see it as a Caleb .’s duck job.
Plant is now scheduled to take on former Benavidez knockout victim Anthony Dirrell, 37. It’s a bad choice of opponent, as Dirrell is on a hill, and not the fighter he was more than 10 years ago when he was at his peak.
Dirrell looked bad when he lost to Benavidez and struggled to beat Avni Yildirim in 2019. Yes, this is the same Yildirim that Canelo Alvarez wiped out in three rounds last year in February 2021. to beat Yildirim shows how washed he is at 37.
Plant seems weak as he declines to fight Benavidez after trash talk on social media, making it look like he cares.
This is disappointing news as many boxing fans want to see the former IBF 168-lb Plant champion (21-1, 12 KOs) take on Benavidez.
With Plant losing to Canelo Alvarez in the 11th round last November, he needs this matchup against Benavidez more than vice versa. The only benefit Benavidez has from fighting Plant is taking him down faster than Canelo did.
Plant gave his excuse for declining the bout by saying that Benavidez was trying to arrange a fight with him even though he was scheduled to face former IBF 160-lb champion David Lemieux on May 21.
It’s not clear why Plant would mind that Benavidez would find a way to schedule a matchup against Lemieux (43-4, 36 KOs). After all, the 33-year-old Lemieux is seen as easy work for Benavidez.
In hindsight, Benavidez must have known that Plant would never fight him, especially now that he lost to Canelo Alvarez in the 11th round.
Plant has never shown any interest in fighting Benavidez in the past, so why is he now willing to fight him after his loss to Canelo?
Lemieux has faced weak opposition since a unanimously decisive round 12 loss to Billy Joe Saunders in 2017.
“He had a war signed before me, then I got a war signed, then he said a number 🧢 and you all believe it. When will you know that you don’t have to hide or lie about anything? I still haven’t proved my bravery yet? Caleb Plant said on Twitter defending why he shouldn’t fight David Benavidez in September.
“So while in camp for one battle, his team negotiated for the next?😂😂😂,” Plant said of Benavidez but did not mention that his fight was a surefire victory over a superior David Lemieux.
It seems Plant was a weak excuse to turn down the fight with Benavidez just because he was scheduled to fight the 33-year-old Lemieux on May 21. How does Plant not know that Benavidez-Lemieux is a Inappropriate disease?
Lemieux hasn’t beaten anyone since his third knockout win over Curtis Stevens in 2017.
After Benavidez defeats Lemieux, he will go on to face Demetrius Andrade for the WBO mandatory place at 168. That match will be later this year.
