He is the FUSE (Frederiksberg Urban Smart Electromobility) project leader, developing and future-proofing knowledge for urban charging infrastructure, and for DTU he has just created a computer charging points in collaboration with Hybrid Greentech, Dansk e-Mobilitet and COWI that cities and municipalities can use to calculate exactly how many charging stations they will need in the future.

Although four out of five electric car owners have the opportunity to charge at home, many public charging stations will still need to be set up in the future to support the transition to electric vehicles.

“Demand is going to grow pretty quickly, and in some places it’s going to double every two years. So it’s important to meet demand here and now, but also think about demand going to be. how it changes in the future,” Peter told Bach Andersen.

The number of charging stations has increased dramatically in recent years but is still surpassed by electric car sales — and if people consider owning an electric vehicle a hassle, progress could be quick. quickly reversed.

“It could reduce the number of electric cars sold,” says Peter Bach Andersen.

Danger of being left behind

According to Elbilviden.dk, there are currently about 7,500 public charging points to meet the demand for 100,000 electric cars currently. But the calculator shows that in just four years, that demand will grow to 26,766. In other words, by 2026, nearly 20,000 additional charging points must be installed. By 2030, demand will need 67,000 charging points if we reach one million Electric Car.

Peter Bach Andersen said: “It shows that we have enough charging points for our current needs. But there is no guarantee that we will have enough in five years and cities are at risk of being abandoned. behind if not well prepared”.

The charging point calculator allows each city to get a specific figure on how many charging stations they expect to need in the future. And demand will make the most sense in urban area because this is where people need daily charging from public charging stations to make life easier for electric car owners.

Frederiksberg Municipality, for example, has an ambitious strategy for electric vehicles, where most residents live within 250 meters of the charging station. But even if the municipality currently has enough charging stations, demand will continue to grow rapidly in the future, and the Frederiksberg Municipality stated that it expects the computer to be a great addition to its efforts to expand its infrastructure. their charger.

Power supply for homes and workplaces

If the charging infrastructure can meet the demand, public charging stations will not. Semi-public chargers are usually cheaper to make because they can use slower chargers because cars spend more time parked. As a result, the charging point calculator gives two numbers—one for the total demand for charging stations and the other for the amount that must be made public. And that makes a lot of sense according to Peter Bach Andersen:

“I doubt that we could achieve our goal without semi-public charging stations and either way it would be very expensive. At the same time, it could contribute to a charging network. well-developed, where charging stations are set up in areas that make the most sense for electric vehicle owners and not just in public places,” he said.

A survey from Megafon from 2018 found that up to 60% of respondents believe that the public charging infrastructure is inadequate. Therefore, it takes a lot of effort to keep up with developments, according to Peter Bach Andersen:

“Many people believe that you can’t have an electric car unless you can charge it at home. We wanted to prove that’s not the case.”
