Cadillac’s new self-driving concept is a luxury-loving wheel

After introducing the six-person self-driving box and a solvable drone concept last year, GM’s latest luxury self-driving EV concept is much more grounded. The The concept of InnerSpace It looks like a futuristic car from the outside — but inside, there’s a two-seat loveseat surrounded by one of the widest screens we’ve ever seen. No steering wheel or pedals, of course. Instead, there’s a built-in couch and a compartment for slippers and blankets. Where GM goes, you won’t need any kind of manual controls.

Even stepping inside the car feels like something from science fiction: the doors pop open, while the large windshield/sunroof pops up. As usual, concepts like InnerSpace are a way for car designers to exercise their muscles and imagine what future vehicles will actually look like. While it’s certainly out of reach for most, perhaps Cadillac’s more affluent clientele would be drawn to owning a personal spaceship. At least it’s better for the environment than full-size luxury SUVs.

“Electrification and autonomous driving will fundamentally change the role vehicles play and the experience customers have with them,” said Bryan Nesbitt, GM’s executive director of Global Advanced Design, in a statement. . “We are exploring where that goes with these innovative concepts that envision mobility as an ally of wellness, offering customers ultimate luxury, plenty of personal time. rather than take advantage of it.”

As someone who hates the act of driving, but lives in a place where I cannot avoid it, it will be interesting to see how automakers turn these self-driving concept cars into reality. And maybe after getting these wild designs through their system, they’ll show us more concepts of self-driving electric family cars.
