Byron Buxton to undergo season-end knee surgery

Twin star Byron Buxton going to have arthroscopic right knee surgery next week, reporting Dan Hayes of The Athletic. It’s a cleanup procedure that is not expected to affect his training readiness next spring, but it will officially close the books on his 2022 season.

Buxton spent the last month on the injury list curing a strain on his right hip. He has been battling pain in his right knee for most of the season. Buxton has generally played through the discomfort, though the Twins have alternated rest days to try to keep him away from the IL. That was just enough until Buxton suffered a hip injury that kept him out of action at the end of August.

The Twins had hoped Buxton would be able to return at the end of the season to aid their efforts in claiming what has been closely contested by AL Central. Instead, the club hit a bad 6-15 record this month, including losing four of five games to the Guardians last weekend. That killed any playoff chances and sent them down four games under 500. Meanwhile, The Guardians swept the White Sox this week and could grab the division as soon as this weekend.

With officially dropped from the post-season controversy, the Twins have decided to shut down Buxton and turn their attention to next season. Obviously this is not the end of the year time that the team or Buxton envisioned, and he is just one of a number of players sidelined. Minnesota also did not have Tyler Mahle, Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco, among others. The roster due to injury has stumbled, while the Guardians have gone on July 15 this month to take control of the division and all but officially book a post-season trip.

Buxton finished his season with 92 games played and 382 appearances. That’s the second-highest workload of his MLB career, just behind the 2017 campaign, in which he played 140 games and hit 511. Buxton has barely played in 2018 and he has been limited to a haircut over half of the team’s games over the past four years.

Recurrent injury troubles make it all the more frustrating as Buxton is one of the sport’s most aggressive players when he’s on the pitch. He’s a top defensive midfielder and he’s been an above-average offensive player since the start of the 2018 season. That includes this season as well, when the previous second overall pick was concluded. concatenated over 28 home runs and posted a slash line .224 / .306 / .526. Last November, Buxton and the Twins agreed to a contract extension that has guaranteed him $100 million and comes with potentially huge bonuses depending on his appearance rankings and MVP results over the next six seasons.
