British decathlete Ben Gregory fighting for life after serious bike crash | UK News
British track and field athlete Ben Gregory is in critical condition after being involved in a serious bicycle crash over the weekend.
The 31-year-old Welsh athlete suffered a fractured skull and neck and multiple brain hemorrhages, according to teammate Naomi Heffernan.
On Instagram, she said: “He is in a coma and on life support.
“Ben needs your positive thoughts and prayers right now. Everyone who knows Ben knows how strong he is mentally and physically, he is a fighter and he will make it through. this.
“Pray for him and send all the positive energy and thoughts you can gather.”
Gregory has represented Great Britain and competed for Wales at three Commonwealth Games – in Delhi in 2010, Glasgow in 2014 and at the Gold Coast four years ago.
He became a trainer and personal trainer.
The British track and field stars sent their best wishes, with former world champion hurdler Dai Greene describing Gregory as “one of the best and most positive people I’ve had the pleasure of having. face at the track”.
“Keep fighting Ben,” he added in a tweet.
Retired track and field athlete Kelly Sotherton, a three-time Olympic bronze medalist, said Gregory is “the energy we all love on the team”.
“You’ve got this Ben,” she wrote.
Stephen Morris, former 1500m Paralympian, shares Greene’s feelings.
“I hope he makes it through,” he said of Gregory on Twitter.
“One of the most beautiful men I met in my athletics days.”
‘Praying for a full recovery’
Athletics Wales released a statement, praising Gregory as the country’s “greatest exhausted athlete”.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ben’s friends and family at this time,” it said.
“Ben’s achievements as an athlete speak for themselves: Wales’ greatest athlete ever – three Commonwealth Games, Wales record holder Wales and represented Wales and Great Britain several times.
“The overwhelming support on social media is testament to his popularity as a human being and as an athlete.
“Everyone who has ever had the privilege of training or playing with Ben will speak of his incredible love of life, his kindness, his support and his loyalty.
“We will all continue to pray for Ben’s full recovery.”
Gregory is also believed to be involved in a bicycle crash in October 2020, but escaped serious injuries.
That incident saw him collide with a car in London, according to WalesOnline.
