Fifty years ago, Brigadier General Gerard (GB) (Queen’s Hussar {GB}) won over King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., and to celebrate his victory he was presented with the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award on Wednesday. As is known, Brigadier has won a staggering 17 of 18 starts under the shirt of breeder John Hislop for coach Major Dick Hern. Among his victories are 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace S., Sussex S., Goodwood Mile, and Queen Elizabeth II S., as well as Champion S. (Click here for a video celebrating his achievement.)

Anne Mercer, wife of the late Joe Mercer, who regularly rode Brigadier General’s bicycle, said, “Brigadier General Gerard was Joe’s favorite racehorse – the horse of his life. Our family has many fond memories of Brigadier General and we are delighted that he has now received the QIPCO Diamonds and Pearls award. “

Dubbed Britain’s Horse of the Century, Brigadier General Gerard retired to stand at Egerton Stud in Newmarket and later as principal of Hislop at East Woodhay. He picked 1980 G1 St Leger winner Light Cavalry (GB), as well as G1 S. 1981 winner Vayrann (Ire). He died in 1989.

Laurence Williamson, groom of Brigadier Gerard, said, “Brigadier Gerard campaigned in an unprecedented ‘golden’ era. From humble beginnings, coming from a blind mare of limited ability and a talented but cheap stallion, whatever Brigadier General Gerard lacked in the crossbreeding he did not compensable in looks and performance. His world-class coach, Major Dick Hern, hailed him as a champion of champions. I will be proud and humbled to be at Ascot when what I believe is one of the greatest racehorses of modern times receives the QIPCO Diamonds and Pearls Award. “
