Braves 2B Ozzie Albies breaks right little finger, potentially ending the season

In only his second game back since being activated off the 60-day injured list, the second Braves Ozzie Albies broke his right little finger during a game against the Phillies on Saturday. The injury occurred during a slip into the second base in the fourth inning, and Albies was replaced by Vaughn Grissom in second base for early fifth.

The severity of the injury has yet to be determined, despite the fact that the initial X-ray that identified the problem before the game was over may indicate more than a minor fracture. It looks like the Albies’ 2022 season could be over, perhaps even if Atlanta makes one more go to the World Series.

Albies was a major contributor to last year’s championship team, winning his second All-Star and Silver Slugger title of his career, and placing 13th in the NL MVP poll. However, Albies got off to a relatively slow start to the first two months of the 2022 campaign before he fractured his left foot on June 13 and required surgery. As noted, Albies was sidelined until just Friday, when he drew 1-1 with two RBIs in Atlanta’s 7-2 win over Philadelphia.

The Braves have managed to thrive even without Albies for most of the season, and Grissom has been somewhat of an immediate contributor after being promoted from Double-A over a month ago. Grissom hit the .304/.355/.482 mark in his first 121 appearances in the professional leagues, leading to some speculation that the Braves will try Grissom on the left side of the court to keep the stick hot. his burn in the squad. However, it looks like opposing pitchers have begun to adapt to Grissom, as the rookie only has 0.607 OPS compared to his last 67 PA.

However, after Albies’ injury, it looks like Grissom will once again be the top pick in second place for the remainder of the regular and post-season. Orlando Arcia are also there to provide depth, and Ehire Adrianza also in hand, but currently on IL due to quad strain. Pat Valaika, Hernan Perezand Ryan Goins are several Triple-A options with an MLB experience, although Atlanta may have to add any of those players to the 40-man roster.

Less than a year ago, the Braves surpassed this rate by winning the World Series despite losing a star player (Acuna) to injury for much of the season and throughout the knockout stages. While the book is still unfinished about Albies’ availability in the post-season, his absence for at least a couple of weeks will make it difficult for the Braves to get past the Mets in the NL East and potentially bye the ring. one. The NL East runner-up is all but guaranteed to be NL’s premier Wild Card team and so is set to host all three games (if needed) of the Wild Card Series, but Atlanta clearly wants to avoid those games. that addition and more chances of elimination.
