Thanksgiving is a couch lover’s dream. There’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, head-to-head soccer games, heartwarming holiday ads and, of course, the National Dog Show.
This year, the American Kennel Club (AKC) approved three new breeds to compete in the National Dog Show: Italian Braccothe Russian toys and mud.
David Frei, host and analyst of the National Dog Show for over 20 years, explains why these three breeds were chosen for this year’s competition: “Finally, they were recognized by the AKC. to compete in dog competitions because they have enough surnames in this country. They have a geographical distribution and they have a parent club that follows them.”

The Philadelphia Kennel Club held the first National Dog Show in 1879 and has held the event every year since 1933. The show began airing on national television in 2002, shortly after release of the film Christopher Guest. The best in the show. Now, about 20 million people across the United States follow it every year.
Stephanie Farr, a writer for Philadelphia Questionersays that for Philadelphians, the event is a hidden gem.
“I’ve been in the Philly area for about 15 years and I didn’t realize I could go in person to the National Dog Show,” says Farr. “And you can walk around the floor of the National Canine Show. It’s one of only three dog shows on the bench in the country. And this year, it’s the only one.”
in one bench, dogs must be on the floor even when they are not actively competing. This allows the audience to interact with them. Upon admission, patrons are provided with a floor map so they can navigate designated areas for each breed.

Spectators are encouraged to interact with the dogs and their owners. Frei says this is the perfect time to get to know a new breed and ask questions about care.
“Because the purpose of a dog show is really to educate the public,” says Frei. “And maybe people can find a dog that fits their lifestyle and fits their family.”
The National Dog Show takes place every year the weekend before Thanksgiving. This year’s show was filmed this past weekend and will air on Thanksgiving Day at 12 p.m. local time in all time zones.
