Boxing News – Latest headlines

Via Justin Jones and Brian Jones: There are many possible and sound suggestions on the Twittersphere and the Internet on how to keep Boxing growing and thriving for the present and the future.

Yes, the review needs a complete overhaul. Pay per view per week during a relentless global pandemic is not the way to go. The fantasy/celebrity exhibit that does better than most of your cards is not a pretty look. I agree, there are too many belts, and Boxing commissions and/or a partnership with various existing commissions for the benefit of the sport would be ideal. Above all, why is “promotion war” still a problem? Don’t have enough greenbacks to go around?

With that said, we all know that the tried-and-true answer is best-versus-best. Simple and straightforward, it works every time – preferably on regular broadcast and cable TV – but that’s another story.

The 168 Series Six, Super Fly and Ali Trophy tournaments are all microcosm of how successful these tournament-style matches have been with the best in the division being for the sport and everyone involved. . In the spirit of the upcoming College Round, we pick four divisions that we believe will provide the best final four tournaments and our predictions for how we view things going. Let us know what you think in the comments and on Twitter – @jusjones29.

Rating Criteria – We rank each division based on talent, awards (e.g. pound balance, champions, records, fixture strength, etc.), viability of those this match and the fan interest we noticed.

Note: There will be no rematch clause in our proposed tournaments. Win or go home. If there is a draw at the end of round 12, a 13th round will be played to decide the winner.

#1 Heavyweight – We believe that the 4 heavyweight finals are the most insightful, critically acclaimed and most exciting of any weight division, thus taking the 1st place.

  • Seeds – #1 Tyson Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOS), #2 Oleksandr Usyk (19-0, 13 KOs), #3 Deontay Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs), #4 Anthony Joshua (24 -2, 22 KOs).

Brian’s prediction: Semifinal: Joshua had some early success in the first four rounds, but Fury’s size and boxing prowess was overwhelming and resulted in a final round TKO against Joshua. Usyk was rated as the favorite but was stopped by Wilder in the following rounds with a quick knockdown punch. Usyk is off to a great start and will be on the scoreboard as one would expect, but Wilder’s length and strength will see him win in disappointment. Final: Wilder has to be great for a few seconds while his opponent has to be great for all 12 rounds, but as we’ve seen before, Fury will be looking for a way to win over Wilder in another FOTY contender match .

Justin’s prediction: Semifinal: Fury overcame Joshua in an entertaining and well-fought match to appear TKO in round 11. Usyk defeated Wilder in a boring bout. Usyk stayed outside, dodging Wilder’s devastating blow, and relied on his superior cards and footwork to secure a 7-5 victory. Final: Fury’s size and skill set was overwhelming for Usyk, and won at UD to become the undisputed Heavyweight Champion.

#2 Welterweight – Welterweight is halfway done, with Errol Spence, Jr. and Yordenis Ugás agreed to play in the spring. Crawford is a free promotional agent, and Keith Thurman called him out, so we just needed this shoe down to make this shoe official in real life. Young Guns – Jaron Ennis (28-0, 26 KOs) and Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (18-0, 18 KOs) – coming, but they need to do a little more to be on this court.

  • Seeds – #1 Terence Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs), #2 Errol Spence, Jr (27-0, 21 KOs), #3 Yordenis Ugás (27-4, 12 KOs), #4 Keith Thurman (29-1) , 22 KOs) – with a win over Mario Barrios (26-1, 17 KOs).

Brian’s prediction: Semifinal: UD’s Crawford on Thurman. Thurman would be reluctant to trade with Crawford, that’s the only reason I’d go with UD instead of winning TKO. Spence will prove to be too much for Ugás and win against UD in a close but clear match 8-4. Final: Spence eliminated Crawford by split decision. Both fighters will respect each other’s skills, that’s why the fight might start out a bit slow, but mid and late in the round, it’s going to be fireworks. Spence will become the undisputed champion in 147th place in the Fight of the Year.

Justin’s prediction: Semifinal: Crawford finished before Thurman. Yes, I know Thurman has never been stopped, but Crawford always seems to be first of many. Spence of UD over Ugás in an interesting scrap. Final: Crawford under the split decision. I found this very tactical – some would say boring – from very early on until the action started, and I found Crawford did enough to overtake Spence in the most anticipated bout of boxing since. from Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (50-0, 27 KOs) vs Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 29 KOs). Crawford became an undisputed two-time champion.

#3 Light Heavy – Light Heavyweight is probably the easiest and most viable of all the subdivisions to do. All the boxers seemed to want to fight each other, and there was no promotional beef in the way.

  • Seeds – #1 Artur Beterbiev (17-0, 17 KOs), #2 Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs), #3 Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (43-0, 29 KOs), #4 Joe Smith, Jr. (27-3, 21 KO) – unless Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KO) decides to join the pool he will push Smith out and move to third seed. Undisputed then will be off the table with Smith, Jr. WBO strap holder.

Brian’s prediction: Semifinal: Beterbiev wins KO against Smith Jr. It will be interesting as the match drags on, but Beterbiev will eventually knock that one punch and turn off the lights for Smith Jr. Zurdo won against UD’s Bivol. Final: Beterbiev wins over Zurdo in a great back-and-forth fight. The cards will be close together during the fight, but Beterbiev will catch and KO Zurdo in the championship round on his way to taking all the belts.

Justin’s prediction: Semifinal: Beterbiev KOs Smith under eight innings. His strength, accuracy, and generals are too much for a mental Smith, Jr. Zurdo overthrew Bivol and won against UD. Final:

Beterbiev won a tough and intense battle with Zurdo.

Beterbiev assigned Zurdo his first defeat, and Zurdo became the first opponent in the last 12 rounds against Beterbiev. Fight of the Year candidate. Beterbiev moved up to the top 5 pound-for-pound and became undisputed at 175.

#4 Light – Lightweight has become the most talked about and one of the most profound disciplines in Boxing, but the issue so far has been mostly – Talk!

  • Seeds – #1 George Kambosas, Jr. (20-0, 10 KOs), #2 Devin Haney (27-0, 15 KOs), #3 Gervonta “The Tank” Davis (26-0, 24 KOs), #4 Vasyl Lomachenko (16-2, 11) KO).

Brian’s prediction: Semifinal: “Loma” will show Kambosas why there are levels to boxing and winning through TKO. Haney will have an early hit, but Tank’s strength will prove the difference in a late KO win. Finally: Davis stops Loma with an upper cut he never sees. Not only did Tank prove why he was the top dog at number 135, but he ended up making the P4P list and getting a KOTY score.

Justin’s prediction: Semifinals: 15 minutes famous Kambosas stop. I like TKO’s Loma. Davis tank pulls back after being carded and scores a KO on Haney’s last round.

Final: Davis stops late Loma with a devastating left-handed punch (uppercut or hook) and silences opponents in dramatic style. He proves he’s Pound-for-Pound-worthy and moves up 5 or 6 on the list. Tank becomes undisputed at 135.

These are the wars and struggles that people want to see in order to do business. We don’t care about the street, the zip code or the number of followers. We just want to see the best in the world play against each other. Is it really too much to ask for? Cheers to a bigger and better boxing year in 2022!
