Former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker has been released from prison after serving an eight-month sentence for concealing £2.5m worth of assets and loans to avoid debt.

He was released from prison on Thursday morning.

The Press Association news agency reported Becker would be deported.

A Home Office spokesman told BBC Sport: “Any foreign national found guilty and sentenced to prison is considered for deportation as soon as the opportunity arises.”

Becker has lived in the United Kingdom since 2012, after retiring in 1999. He has won six Grand Slam singles titles, including three at Wimbledon, during his 15-year career.

He was declared bankrupt in June 2017 for an outstanding loan of more than £3 million against his estate in Mallorca, Spain.

Becker went to court earlier this year accused of hiding assets worth millions of pounds to avoid debt.

In the end, he was found guilty of four counts in connection with his bankruptcy but was acquitted of 20 more.

It is reported that Becker was initially held at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London before being transferred to Huntercombe Prison in May.

Becker is eligible for automatic deportation as a non-British foreign national and has received a detention sentence of more than 12 months.

He previously worked as a BBC expert on Wimbledon and spent three seasons coaching 21-time major singles champion Novak Djokovic.
